Attention Elementary: Amplify issues - MClass Won't Connect

Attention Elementary: Amplify issues - MClass Won't Connect?
Please share this information from Amplify with teachers
who might be having connection issues.
This error is due to an update we made to our whitelist (www.amplify.com/whitelist) over the weekend. Any teacher who did not log out properly prior to the update will receive a "Cannot connect to mCLASS:Home services" message, as they are being blocked by the local firewall.

We are currently working on a fix to resolve this issue. In the meanwhile, any affected devices should not be used to continue assessing/progress monitoring. An alternative device should be used, such as a desktop or laptop with Google Chrome by going to www.mclasshome.com/assessment, but do not re-assess or continue assessing a student who has unsynced data on the original device.

If it is urgent for this data to be synced, the teacher should copy the student's responses into a device that will sync, and sync the assessment from that device.
Once this is completed, or if there is not any unsynced student data, the teacher can force the original device to function properly again by following these steps:

(do NOT follow these steps without duplicating the data and ensuring it has synced to mCLASS:Home first)
Delete the mCLASS icon (if there is more than one icon, delete all of them).
Go into Settings and click Safari
Click "Clear Browser History and Other Website data"
Click OK
Click "Advanced..."
Click "Website Data" and make sure it says 0 Bytes.
Go back to the iPad homescreen and open Safari
Go to www.mclasshome.com/assessment
Log in and allow it to sync all the way (if you get a class selection screen, choose any class and sync)
To the right of the address bar, click the box with the arrow out the top
Click Add to homescreen
Verify icon is orange, then add.
Go back into Safari
Hit "Log Out"

Please make sure to sync after every student and log out using the Log Out button whenever you take a break and/or finish assessing for the day!

If there are any issues or questions, please call us with the device on hand at 1-800-823-1969, ext. 3.

IMPORTANT MCLASS iPAD UPDATE for Elementary Media and Tech!

Attention Elementary Media/Tech: After much discussion the MClass ipads are in need of an update prior to going home for the summer (you can begin Monday and have until the last workday to complete the update).  I'm sorry for the late notice but this new procedure has just become active in our management system and with Apple.

This update will need to be completed by one of you (Media/Tech) or each individual K-3 teacher who has a device from the county for Mclass,  the directions are outlined here and you need to be sure you only do these steps on MCLASS devices.  Please let your MClass manager know about this information as well.
If you have questions contact April Richardson or myself.  Thank you for helping us keep this technology working for your teachers.

Mclass ipads - ios 9.0

Today Apple released an update to iOS 9.  MClass has released this statement regarding the update:

IMPORTANT! iOS 9 Update On Wednesday, September 16, Apple is releasing its new operating system, iOS 9. mCLASS® assessments are compatible and ready for use with iOS 9, with the exception of mCLASS Beacon and mCLASS:TPRI.

All mCLASS products will continue to work on iOS 8, as well.

Warning: Users upgrading their Apple devices to iOS 9 must sync the mCLASS app before upgrading to avoid losing data stored on the device.

The Team at Amplify

I would have your teachers carefully look at the amount of space they have available on their device prior to updating.  This update takes 1.3 GB and the last update was 4.6 GB so if they are still at iOS7 they will need 5.9 GB free to upgrade to the most current iOS and this is almost 1/2 of the storage on the devices.

MClass Information

There have been some questions regarding ipads, since many teachers will begin assessing during the first week of school.

We have asked for verification from Amplify that it is ok to update, here is their response.  Please share with your K-3 teachers.

The iOS versions currently compatible with our mCLASS Apps are iOS 8 and above.
The only reason you should have to delete and reinstall the apps is if you're having an error accessing the app or logging in to the app.
The only thing that would need to be updated on your device would be the iOS if it is below iOS 8.

http://www.amplify.com/assessment/devices   lists all the minimum Operating systems and browsers and requirements for each device our app is supported by.

If you need any further assistance or have more questions, please call us at 1-800-823-1969, Option 3.
Or email us at help@amplify.com

Update on iOS 8

iOS 8 Update for mClass

We have asked Amplify for clarification regarding the update for iOS 8 on mClass ipads.  Here is what we were told.
  1. The update takes 4 GB of free space to install
  2. If you update you will no longer be able to use the "app" on your devices you will have to go to Safari and type: www.mclasshome/assessments to log in and assess via a browser, each time you are working with your students.
  3. The current version will continue to work with iOS 7.1 via the app
  4. If you do decide to update you will need to sync your mClass data prior to updating.
Therefore, while it is possible to update your device, we still do not recommend updating unless you are using your ipad with another app that requires the update. If you have additional questions about whether or not to update - please email Amy Stanley.

Do Not Update mClass iPads to iOS8!

Please read the message below from Amplify regarding updating to iOS8:

At this time we currently recommend that customers remain on iOS 7, and recommend against moving forward with upgrading to iOS 8.  While we have made improvements to our experience on Safari under iOS 8, there remain issues that impact the usability of certain activities.  Additionally, as witnessed by the recent release and pull back of iOS 8.0.1, Apple is continuing to work on fixing stability and functional issues within iOS 8 that may impact our product.

For customers who have updated their devices to iOS 8 we fully support Chrome under iOS 8, and that may be used as a valid workaround until we fully support Safari under iOS 8.  If an iPad has been updated to iOS 8 the key areas in which usability is affected in Safari are short answer activities, copying text from a reading excerpt activity, and writing activities.

We are continuing to work diligently on a fix for these issue and will have an update on a timeframe for resolution within the next week.

MClass iPads - Do NOT upgrade to iOS8

Don't Update Yet

The Amplify team is currently testing mCLASS with the new Apple iOS8 update. It's supposed to be released on 9/17 so we recommend that all NC schools wait until after 9/17 to update their Apple devices. However, there may also be bugs Apple has to fix, so it will be best to wait until after your BOY window closes to update devices.  Please turn off the automatic update feature, if enabled on your Apple devices, in order to manually upgrade when everything is cleared and tested.

Please share with your K-3 teachers and others who might assist with mCLASS testing.  The mCLASS representative at the schools should be getting this as well.

Also just a head's up the mCLASS ipads AppleCare runs out October 9, 2014 so if you have some that need repairs you will want to move forward to get those taken care of soon.

mClass Potential Issue and Solution

We are getting reports from a couple of elementary schools about an issue with the mClass application causing iPads to freeze or restart and losing data. The issue seems to revolve around the recent update to iOS and mClass app causing iPads that do not have the latest updates to malfunction. If you are experiencing this issue, please make sure you have the latest update to iOS and the shortcut to mClass is displayed as an orange icon.

Here are the instructions to add the mClass App shortcut:

Odds & Ends

We have a few announcements:

1. Tech Readiness: Reminder you due date for Tech Readiness is June 1 - please remember you put in your NEW equipment and delete anything you have discarded or are no longer planning to use for testing.

2. MClass for K-3 there have been a few having trouble syncing so here are a few things to help remedy this for teachers:

  • Have your teachers periodically sync after a few students sync (they can do it at a bathroom break or before lunch or recess) so that it isn't sending a full days data all at once.
  • You can check to make sure your school doesn't have any additional OLD access points floating around this will conflict with your ceiling mounted JCS_WIRELESS network and may cause issues, if you find any old access points remove them from the network by unplugging them both from the wall and network.
3. Chromebooks Warranties - there are currently 2 models of Chromebooks the first model is the Series 5 (they are black) and the 303 (they are silver) both are produced by Samsung.  However the warranty claims for the two models are different.
  • With the Series 5 - you will have a Google Support account created by Shirley Nixon with your first case, you will enter the case into the system and they will assist you with the replacement units.
  • With the 303 Model - you will place a call directly to Samsung, We have placed a document in the Tech Leader Folder with how to complete a Warranty Call click to see the document.
4. Discovery Ed Techbook is backDiscovery contacted us to day to share that techbooks are being offered for the NC Science Techbook and SS Techbook for grades 6-8th FREE of charge until the end of June.
If you have teachers who might be interested in, please have them access the following site to learn more and register:  Learn more and get started today

Current Offerings:
NC aligned Science Techbook for grades K-12
SS for grades 6-8th: World History, US History, and World Geography and Cultures

Asset Visits

We will be visiting every school to
  1. transfer mCLASS iPads (for elementary) from the district inventory to your school inventory
  2. transfer ESL iPads and minis from the district inventory to your school inventory and
  3. begin this year's asset inventory.  We will scan computer equipment for you.
Since we will be entering every classroom, you and your principal will be notified ahead of time so you can prepare teachers.  It is extremely helpful on the day we inventory and transfer assets that district-issued mCLASS and ESL iPads are near the door and out of their protective covers so we do not have to pause instruction to ask for the location of those devices.

mClass iPads

Elementary tech leaders heads up! Your teachers may have already discovered a little glitch with deleting apps on their new ipads.  They cannot delete anything even if they downloaded it with their Apple ID.  We are working on a fix, but it may require resyncing their device to our management computer.  It might be a while before we get it repaired, so please caution mClass teachers to be careful downloading at this time. We will keep you posted as we know more about a solution.
