Tech Thursday (11/11/21): NEW Group Web Rules in Relay Classroom!

 




Exciting updates for Relay Classroom users! Relay Classroom updates took effect on November 3rd, 2021 will include a new Early Access beta feature: Group Web Rules.



Group Web Rules enable teachers to apply Web Rules to the specific groups (Student Segments) that they create.





Group Web Rules are applied by clicking the Group Web Rules button on any Student Segment, selecting Allow or Block, inputting the URLs in the fly-out menu, and pressing Apply Changes.



None

  • No Group Web Rules are applied.
    Note: Any Web Rules applied to the entire class (Default Group plus all Student Segments) will be applied to the group when None is selected in Group Web Rules.

Allow

  • Restrict students browsing to a specific list of websites. This allows for a maximum of 100 websites.
    Note: Group Web Rules override the Web Rules applied to the entire class (Default Group plus all Student Segments). 

Block

  • Provides full access to the internet except for any websites that the teacher lists. This allows for a maximum of 100 websites.
    Note: Group Web Rules override the Web Rules applied to the entire class (Default Group plus all Student Segments).

Also included in this update:

  • Class Controls (Screen Lock, Send Link, Web Rules, Share Screen) are moved from Class Settings in the left-navigation menu to top of the group list and heat map views.





  • Allow and Block can be applied to both website domains and specific URLs.

  • Group Web Rules can be used to Allow or Block a specific URL for a Student Segment, while the rest of the class has Allow or Block rules applied for the entire domain.

    • For Example:

      • The class is allowed to visit the entirety of youtube.com via applied Web Rules, while a Student Segment, via applied Group Web Rules is only allowed to visit a specific YouTube URL

Weekly Update

Email Spamming Rules - please do not use the phrase "Private Message" all messages with this phrase are being flagged and will not go through.  This is in an attempt to help with some spamming.

Please select another phrase private comment, individual email, etc would not be flagged.  This might help your teachers get information to their students.

Important - please encourage all your teachers who are using RELAY classroom to clean up their classes from previous years.  They should be archiving old sections and removing students that are no longer under their watch.  Also, remember any restrictions you set through Relay Classroom at the beginning of the class should be removed when class is over.  This is impacting students and preventing them from doing their school work.  If these issues continue, Relay Classroom will be disabled for all schools.  Your diligence to train your teachers on how to use this tool will save everyone a lot of headache.  Here is a link to the training. It takes just 15 minutes to complete.

It is mandatory for all CTAs and Tech Contacts to attend one beginning of the year meeting and one end of the year meeting in order to maintain rights and access.

Relay Classroom

If you school used Relay Classroom last year it is IMPORTANT that you remind teachers they have to do one of the following to their classes last year:
1. Archive and Delete the class - found on the menu of any archived class

2. Clear all the students out of inactive classes
OR
3. Open Relay and remove any and all restrictions they had placed on the class last year, if you have active students in the class this is the one you want to select.

Relay Classroom


We are excited to share that the pilot for Relay classroom (our activity monitoring software) has gone really well and we are ready to offer you resources to roll it out to your staff. Our biggest priority is that tool is used ethically to improve instruction so we want to ensure you have the knowledge and information you need to help you teachers do that. So how do you get started?

You need to complete the training and email Amy your certificate and we will send you the link to get started or you can give me a quick call and we can chat via hangouts and then you can roll it out to your staff.  Below are two possible roll out scenarios.

Roll out option 1 (just I am rolling out with you):
1. Share the flyer with staff members and encourage them to complete the training/badge independently  Attached is flyer: FLYER
2. Have them bring/email a completed training certificate to you and then you share the website with them
3. Encourage them to try it and get back with you if they have questions.

Roll out option 2:
Offer a demo of the site at a PLC or staff meeting and then send them back with the flyer to complete the training, then share the website.

We know this is a bit of work on your part to insure that all teachers complete the training prior to use however the 15/20 minute investment will save you lots of work down the road and will prepare them to use the tool effectively.

We know teachers will love the tool and find this small investment of time worthwhile as well
