Technology Thursday (5/26/22): Canvas and Google Classroom Cleanup

Canvas and Google Classroom Cleanup

It's that time of year! Time to clean up your digital classroom space so you will be ready for a fresh start in 22-23. Follow these tips for Canvas and Google Classroom.

Canvas:

  • It's a good idea to export your classes from this semester/year so you will have a copy of the course file.
  • If you are changing schools or roles for next year, consider adding a colleague to this year's courses as a designer so they will have access to your content and can copy the content into their courses for next year.
  • At the end of the year, after all, students have finished working, conclude your course so no further submissions can be made.
  • Consider organizing your dashboard and favorite courses for quick access next year.

Google Classroom:

  • Be sure to archive classes in Google Classroom, this also clears any Lightspeed restrictions/rules you have created for students which are very important to avoid issues next year.
  • Clean up calendars from this year's Google Classes by clicking on the three dots next to the calendar and clicking "hide from list" OR you can delete the calendar by clicking on "settings and sharing", then scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click the delete button.
  • Remember that all of your content from every Google Classroom class is saved in your Classroom folder on your Google Drive. You can use these files to easily populate your classes next year.

We hope these tips help you wrap up the school year and give you an organized start for 22-23!

Friday G Suite Update: End of Year Tips for Classroom!

This week, we are sharing strategies for wrapping up your Google Classroom for the year.

Clean Up Your Google Drive

Google Classroom creates a "Classroom" folder in your Google Drive. In the folder is a sub-folder for each class you have created. You can move the folders and I recommend making a new favorites folder and moving any favorite assignments or project examples to this folder. It will make it easy to add assignments or handouts next year to your new classes.

Another good idea is to create a 2016-2017 sub-folder in your "Classroom" folder and move all your current courses into the folder. This will make it clean and ready to go for next year.

Archive 2016-2017 Classes

Google has an archive tool to save your completed classes and remove them from your home screen. Note that you cannot add new assignments and students can no longer turn in assignments once a class is archived.

To archive a class, login to Google Classroom and click on the three dots next to the class you wish to archive.

To see a list of your archived classes, click on the  button and scroll to the bottom, then click on "archived classes".

Start Planning Ahead

It is not too early to go ahead and create your new classes for next year. I recommend creating new classes each semester or year, depending on how often you get new students.  Google Classroom has the ability to save assignments and announcements as drafts and reuse assignments, you can use this time to pre-populate your classes as well as add your syllabus and resource documents.

Don't forget that you can now schedule posts to appear for your students on the first day of 2017-2018!

Friday G Suite Update: Create a Classroom with Personal Gmail Accounts!

Happy Friday!

Image result for google classroom

This week, Classroom was updated to be available for private Gmail users. Now you can create a Classroom with a personal account to use with groups or adult learners that is not tied to your edu account. I am going to suggest this to my son's soccer coach for organizing snacks and updates on games. Lots of possibilities with this announcement!

Have a great weekend!

Friday Google Tidbit: New Updates to Google Classroom

This week Google has updated Google Classroom with three new features: assignments can now be assigned to individual students, teacher notifications for students who submit late assignments, and teacher notifications for students who resubmit assignments. These are exciting updates that make it easier to personalize your instruction in Google Classroom.

How to Assign to Individual Students:

How to Setup Classroom Notifications

Click on the link above to setup your classroom notifications for when you get an email alert for certain actions including when a student submits late assignments or resubmits assignments.

Friday Google Tidbit: New Ways to Use Google Apps for Education!

Happy Friday!

This week we are sharing a special Back to School episode of The Google Apps Show. This episode highlights how to use some exciting new features of Google Apps for Education including Google Cast, Google Classroom Updates, and Google Expeditions.

Here is a brief overview of the video segments:

Jenny discusses Cast for EDU (http://google.com/edu/cast-for-edu), which was the #1 request from educators last year. Teachers can move around the class interacting with students 1:1, and students can share their screens with the click of a button.

Parents and guardians can now receive daily or weekly email summaries of their student's progress. This makes it easier for parents to stay up-to-date on what’s happening in the classroom. (http://googleforeducation.blogspot.com)

Recently, the Google Education team launched the annotation feature, which helps students understand complex problems such as math or science through a whiteboard-like feature. Annotations are also great for teachers too. Teachers can quickly grade assignments by writing directly on the student’s work, or highlight the most important passages in a text or novel.

Lastly, we discover Google Expeditions (https://www.google.com/edu/expeditions/). Students can discover the human cardiovascular system or the Himalayas in Bhutan. Since we launched Expeditions, more than 1 million students across 11 countries have been on one of these virtual field trips.

For the latest EDU announcements and updates, check out http://googleforeducation.blogspot.com/

Have a great weekend!

Friday Google Tidbit: Looking Forward to Next Year in Google Classroom

In the fall of the 2015/16 school year, Google released several extremely useful updates to Classroom.

These included the ability to create a question, the ability to move posts to the top of the stream, and perhaps most helpful, the reuse post option. Shortly after that, Google added the Share to Classroom extension as well as integration with Google Calendar

These updates added a great deal of functionality to Classroom. Not only in terms of learning options, but workflow as well. The rapid addition of so many features right at the beginning of the school was a pleasant surprise to many teacher who continue to look forward to more new features.

What Can We Look Forward to Next Year?

So far there has only been one new feature announced for 2016-2017.

However, it's a BIG one and something many teachers having been asking for.

Earlier this month, Google announced that features to improve contact with guardians will be launched this fall. Guardians will now be able to sign up for daily or weekly emails, allowing them to easily keep up with their student's progress and assignments. By using this feature along with the ability to share the classroom calendar, Google Classroom make it easy to keep all stakeholders informed of what is happening in classrooms!

This week, Google Classroom released a new feature that allows you to schedule posts in advance for your classroom. This is an excellent feature that allows you to work ahead of your students and schedule posts to appear when you want students to see them.

To use the new feature, open Google Classroom and create a new post:

Click on the blue down arrow button to see the post options.

Click on "Schedule" and choose the date and time you want the post to appear.

Your scheduled posts will be saved at the top of your classroom stream.

Friday Google Tidbit: Create Questions and Polls in Google Classroom!

Happy Friday!

This week Google Classroom has released a new feature that allows you to create questions and polls within your classroom.

To get started, open a class in Google Classroom and click on the "+" button in the lower right corner.

Click on "Create question" and enter your question and select either multiple choice or short answer response.

You can add Google Drive files, links, or videos to your question.

You can allow students to see a class summary of responses. This does not show individual responses.

Here is what it looks like for the students to respond to a multiple choice question.

This new feature gives you a great way to collect student opinions or gather formative assessment data.

Friday Google Tidbit: Gradebook Split Screen Extension

Happy Friday!

Alice Keeler at Teacher Tech has developed a Chrome extension that will allow you to split your screen so that you can have your student work in Google Classroom open on one half of your screen and your gradebook open on the other side of the screen. This is a handy timesaver when grading student work.

Friday Google Tidbit: Tips for End of the Semester in Google Classroom

This week, we are sharing strategies for wrapping up your Google Classroom for the semester.

Clean Up Your Google Drive

Google Classroom creates a "Classroom" folder in your Google Drive. In the folder is a sub-folder for each class you have created. You can move the folders and I recommend making a new favorites folder and moving any favorite assignments or project examples to this folder. It will make it easy to add assignments or handouts next semester to your new classes.

Another good idea is to create a Fall 2015 sub-folder in your "Classroom" folder and move all your current courses into the folder. This will make it clean and ready to go for next semester.

Archive Fall Classes

Google has an archive tool to save your completed classes and removes them from your home screen.

It is not too early to go ahead and create your new classes for second semester. I recommend creating new classes each semester or year, depending on how often you get new students. Now that Google Classroom has the ability to save assignments and announcements as drafts and reuse assignments, you can use this time to pre-populate your classes as well as add your syllabus and resource documents.

Friday Google Tidbit: Google Forms Integration Now Available in Google Classroom!

Happy Friday!

Google Classroom has just been updated to now include Google Forms integration!

This is wonderful news as you can now attach a Google Form to an assignment in Google Classroom and it will automatically track student submissions to the form. You can use Google Forms for a variety of purposes in the classroom such as assessments and reading log submissions.

Using Forms in Google Classroom is simple...open Google Classroom, then click on your desired class, click on the + button:

Create a new assignment by adding a title and due date, then click the Drive icon to attach your Google Form, then click assign.

Google will automatically create a link for you to view student responses in the post for the assignment (only teachers can see the link to submissions):

If you need a quick tutorial on how to use Google Forms, here is a video tutorial for making a student information form.

Friday Google Tidbit: Instructions for Exporting and Importing Events from Google Calendar

Happy Friday!

With the recent addition of calendar integration in Google Classroom, a few people have asked us about merging calendars. Unfortunately in Google Calendar, you cannot merge calendars and there is no way in Google Classroom to select a different calendar to use other than the one that is automatically created.

There is a work around for merging calendars, you can export events from one Google Calendar and then import those events to a different Google Calendar. The export/import process does not have to be completed under the same Google account, once the events are exported, that person can share the exported event file with anyone to import on their Google Calendar.

There are a couple of situations you may find this process very useful for:
  • A public school calendar is owned by someone who leaves the school and someone else needs to take over posting public school events.
  • A teacher has created a public calendar for students/parents with homework or school events and would now like to transfer those events to their new Google Classroom calendar.
  • A team calendar is owned by someone who is leaving/no longer on that team and someone else would like to create a new team calendar and import those events.
Dave has created written instructions for the export/import process. Please click here to view the instructions. The instructions are also available in the Tech Contact/Media folder.

Have a safe and dry weekend!

Friday Google Tidbit - Google Classroom now has Calendar Integration!

The latest update to Google Classroom has added a helpful feature to keep students and parents informed of upcoming assignments. Google Classroom now integrates with Google Calendar so that all activities are instantly posted to Google Calendar as they a assigned.

To start using this feature, go to the About tab in Google Classroom.

You will now see two new options:
  1. View in Classroom
  2. Open in Google Calendar.

Calendar setup.png

Choosing View in Classroom will display a calendar within Google Classroom that displays any announcements, assignments or discussions that have been posted.

Choosing Open in Google Calendar will open up your Google Calendar which will now have a new calendar added. This calendar will have the same name as the title of your Google Classroom.

If the box in your About tab looks says No Google Calendar created, it simply means that you have not yet posted in your Google Classroom.

Calendar setup 1.png

Once you post your first assignment, announcement or discussion, a Google Calendar created specifically for your class will be generated.

Sharing Your Calendar

Once you begin adding items to the calendar, you will likely want to share it outside of Google Classroom so that the parents of your students will be able to see due dates.

In order to do this, open your calendar and click the gear symbol in the upper right corner. Then click on settings

Calendar settings.png

On the next screen click the calendars link in the upper left hand corner.

Calendar Settings 2.png

This will open up a screen listing all of your calendars and calendars that are shared with you. From this screen you can edit the sharing settings. On the right hand side, click on the Shared: Edit setting link.

On the next screen, you will need to select Share this calendar with other AND Make this calendar public. If you do not choose to make the calendar public then you will not be able to share it with parents. Make sure to click Save.
