Media Monday: Discarded Books

Now that we have started evaluating our library collections and weeding some of the books, what can we do with these books?

Check out a few ideas in the articles below...

https://www.lrs.org/documents/field_stats/weeding_LP.pdf

Find out if your teachers or students want these books?

Daniel Barrett and Vanessa Watson simply sent an email out to teachers and they were happy to come and get books!

Turn them into something cool! Old books make great additions to Makerspaces.

Students at Four Oaks, Smithfield Middle Cleveland Middle turn their books into holiday decorations for their libraries.
For more craft ideas, check out thousands of ideas on Pinterest! Also the articles below have great ideas.

Donate to schools affected by Hurricane Matthew

The boys and girls club in Selma lost all of their books; contact Leta Woodall to donate to them.
We also have contacted Edgecombe and Robeson County to see how we could help them. We are still waiting for a response to develop a plan.

Remember to communicate with your stakeholders why you are getting rid of books.

Emily Vann created a screencast to share her staff the Titlewise Analysis and to also include them in her collection development. Check out her video!

Save the books for the statewide, summer reading program,

Media Monday: Evaluation of Resources Guidelines

As you begin weeding your school's library collection, please consider the following guidelines shared below from our JCS Media Handbook and NC IMPACT standards.
JCS Evaluation Guidelines
An important part of collection development is continual assessment of media resources. It is the responsibility of the media coordinator to develop a plan to assess the current collection annually at the end of each school year. Assessment of the collection includes taking inventory of existing materials and weeding outdated and inappropriate materials. The inventory will be completed by utilizing the automated cataloging system and checking for the actual item on the shelf. Then selected items are checked to be sure that they meet the required selection criteria.

The following criteria should be considered when evaluating the collection.

  • Materials that are damaged beyond repair should be discarded.
  • Materials that are not current in information will be removed from the collection.
  • Materials that do not have regular circulation should be flagged and considered for removal.

IMPACT CRITERIA FOR WEEDING/SELECTING
SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA RESOURCES
Relevance to the curriculum
Copyright date
  Condition of the material
Date last circulated
Enduring value (classics, rare books, etc.)
Reading/interest level
 Authoritative writing
Bias/stereotypes
Recommended in current selection tool and/or other review sources
 Local interest/community needs (Lowe, 2001)

Next Week's edition...What can I do with these resources once I decide they no longer
need to be part of our library collection!?

Media Monday: Video Viewing Reminders

It's the most wonderful time of the year...
It is that time of year when you find your staff looking for creative ways to educate our students!
Many times this means they are looking for videos to share.
Be sure to take a moment to review with your staff the proper video showing procedures to ensure that they are not breaking copyright laws.
You can also share the "safe" places to locate educational "tools"
like Discovery Education and NC Wise Owl.

From the Johnston County Schools Procedures Manual for Media Centers,
In accordance with Johnston County Board Policy, all digital media broadcasts other than those from the school media center or central office collection require written prior approval from the principal.  The approval is granted for specific classes and it never extends for more than one school year.

1. In accordance with Fair Use Standards, a video must be used for face-to-face curriculum-based instruction as part of a regular activity and may not be used as a reward or as a “filler.”
2. All videos and digital media must be previewed by the teacher prior to use in the classroom.
3. In accordance with JCS Board Policy 3330-R, Disney Entertainment films may not be shown in the classroom, unless they are purchased from Disney’s Educational division.  They will have the words “Disney Educational” on them.
4. Teachers are exempt from the public performance prohibition only if they meet ALL FOUR of these criteria:
  • The teacher must be present when the viewing occurs.
  • The video must be shown in a classroom setting and only the students enrolled in that class may attend the showing.
  • The video content must be a direct connection to the curriculum being taught and it may not be used as a reward or filler.
  • The video/digital media being used must be a legal copy, not copied from a legitimate copy.
5. Recordings of television programs on stations received by the general public may be shown to students within the first 10 days following airing and may be retained as references for a period of 45 days.
6. Privately purchased videotapes and DVDs labeled home use only may not be shown in the classroom over the media retrieval system.
7. Videos/digital media that are shown in the classroom must be purchased by a teacher or school through an educational vendor. The following vendors are recommended:
  • Follett
  • Library Video Company
  • PBS Video
  • AIMS Multimedia
  • Disney Educational Productions
  • Teacher’s Video Company
  • Discovery Channel
  • History Channel
  • A & E
    8. All school-owned videotapes and DVDs should be housed in a central location with an organized system for checkout and return. Teachers, departments, or grade levels that have purchased collections of videos with instructional funds should place these videotapes and DVDs in this collection and identify the curriculum and grade level these videos support. All videotapes and DVDs housed within the school must be catalogued through the school’s media center.
    9. Personal video equipment may not be attached to classroom monitors. Bringing a VCR and DVD player from home for classroom use violates the technology use agreement for Johnston County School employees.

    Digital Media Guidelines

In the Johnston County School System, the viewing of rated videos is restricted to:

    Grade Levels
    Video Ratings
    K – 4
    G
    5 – 8
    G, PG with parental permission
    9 – 12
    G, PG, PG-13

JCS Board Policy prohibits the broadcasting of digital media that violates copyright for student viewing.

All videos, regardless of rating, should be shown with discretion. Videos with ratings other than G, PG, or PG-13 are strictly forbidden. No R-rated videos may be shown in JCS.

Teachers who wish to use a PG rated film for grades 5- 8 should preview the video, receive written prior approval from the principal using a fully completed Request for Prior Approval of Digital Broadcast and, upon approval, should do the following:
    • Provide written notice to parents with an alternative assignment option. Notice must include an accurate description of the contents of the videotape or DVD, the educational objective, and information on where the parent or guardian may obtain the video for preview.
    • Require a signed permission statement from the parent or guardian of each student prior to allowing students to view the video and keep the signed forms on file.
    • Offer to a student, upon parent request, a meaningful alternative activity in association with the same learning objective.

Here is the link for the "Prior Approval of a Digital Media Broadcast" form.
If your school has purchased the Public Performance Rights Site License here is the information on what that license allows.

    Join Pizza Hut and
    National Young Readers Week
    from November 7th- 11th!

From the Book it! website, "Since 1989, National Young Readers Week has been an annual event held during the second week of November to raise awareness around the importance of reading. The event was co-founded by Pizza Hut and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. We are continuing our tradition of challenging principals across the country to become shining examples for literacy by choosing one day to read their heart out all day long, from first bell to the last during National Young Readers Week. Principals have risen to the challenge over the last several years reading everywhere from hallways, playgrounds and rooftops on their chosen school day. Choose your day. Choose your reading location. Register your school. Use our media alert to spread the word to your local media. And tag your pics on social media with #YoungReaders so we can follow along!"
