Media Monday: Discarded Books

Now that we have started evaluating our library collections and weeding some of the books, what can we do with these books?

Check out a few ideas in the articles below...

Find out if your teachers or students want these books?

Daniel Barrett and Vanessa Watson simply sent an email out to teachers and they were happy to come and get books!

Turn them into something cool! Old books make great additions to Makerspaces.

Students at Four Oaks, Smithfield Middle Cleveland Middle turn their books into holiday decorations for their libraries.

Donate to schools affected by Hurricane Matthew

The boys and girls club in Selma lost all of their books; contact Leta Woodall to donate to them.
We also have contacted Edgecombe and Robeson County to see how we could help them. We are still waiting for a response to develop a plan.

Remember to communicate with your stakeholders why you are getting rid of books.

Emily Vann created a screencast to share her staff the Titlewise Analysis and to also include them in her collection development. Check out her video!

Save the books for the statewide, summer reading program,

Media Monday: Evaluation of Resources Guidelines

As you begin weeding your school's library collection, please consider the following guidelines shared below from our JCS Media Handbook and NC IMPACT standards.
JCS Evaluation Guidelines
An important part of collection development is continual assessment of media resources. It is the responsibility of the media coordinator to develop a plan to assess the current collection annually at the end of each school year. Assessment of the collection includes taking inventory of existing materials and weeding outdated and inappropriate materials. The inventory will be completed by utilizing the automated cataloging system and checking for the actual item on the shelf. Then selected items are checked to be sure that they meet the required selection criteria.

The following criteria should be considered when evaluating the collection.

  • Materials that are damaged beyond repair should be discarded.
  • Materials that are not current in information will be removed from the collection.
  • Materials that do not have regular circulation should be flagged and considered for removal.

IMPACT CRITERIA FOR WEEDING/SELECTING

Next Week's edition...What can I do with these resources once I decide they no longer
need to be part of our library collection!?
