Technology Services is now located at Facility Services. Since we had a site change, our phone number and extensions were changed as well.  If you are calling outside of JCPS, our phone number is 919-205-9050 and you will be prompted to enter an extension.<br />

<b>New User Agreement for Chromebooks & Hotspots</b><br />
We will be using a <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nTn0Fd__9tKTGMgniPtdehF5vxMoF4rA/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">new form</a> for checking out chromebooks and wifi hotspots (these document have been combined)  Here is the link to the new version (the <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/18jByU5r3Wn3o0vKHSNNjSXyRAP0H_NfN/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Spanish version</a> is also included).  Information is forthcoming regarding hotspot distribution based on needs identified by the principals.  Note there is a limited supply and special set up by tech services is required.<br />

All student accounts should be checked to make sure they don't already have a device prior to another device being issued.  <b>Report non-returns </b>to Christa Leverette so they can be disabled, we will need serial number and barcode.<br />

We are in the process of creating a "help" option for parents and students to be able to reach out for assistance at the school level.  This will on your website and each school principal will be asked to identify a few people to receive notification and follow through to get back with the student/parent with assistance.  All the details are not available at this time, but wanted to let you know that you might be asked to be part of this process.  We appreciate in advance your willingness to always help!<br />

<b>Classlink</b><br />

Because our students will be remote learning this fall, Tech Services has turned on the email feature for our K-2 students.  Please note, K-2 students can only send/receive emails to/from students and staff.   If you are an elementary contact please help make sure your teachers know this is available and if possible offer tips for teaching their students how to access messages and respond as well as digital citizenship tips for email.<br />

Chromebooks in Tech Ready

We are sending a huge thank you to those who are already entering devices in the <a href="http://www.techreadiness.net/" target="_blank">Tech Readiness Tool</a>!  Much to our delight, Chromebooks have been approved for state testing, but the Tech Readiness Tool uses Internet Explorer to pull the specifications from the machine.  Because Chromebooks only have the Chrome browser, we will have to manually enter the specifications, which you can find below.<br />

New Location & New Processes

Technology Services is now located at Facility Services. Since we had a site change, our phone number and extensions were changed as well. If you are calling outside of JCPS, our phone number is 919-205-9050 and you will be prompted to enter an extension.

Our district directory will be updated in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you can access our extensions here.

Please make note of these changes and share this information as needed.

New User Agreement for Chromebooks & Hotspots
We will be using a new form for checking out chromebooks and wifi hotspots (these document have been combined) Here is the link to the new version (the Spanish version is also included). Information is forthcoming regarding hotspot distribution based on needs identified by the principals. Note there is a limited supply and special set up by tech services is required.

All student accounts should be checked to make sure they don't already have a device prior to another device being issued. Report non-returns to Christa Leverette so they can be disabled, we will need serial number and barcode.

Chromebooks *CRITICAL*
PLEASE note that ALL chromebooks need to be updated to the latest Chrome OS, before they are checked out for home use. Here is a video on how to update, note you will need to sign in to the device to do this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoDbZx1V5qk

Help Button
We are in the process of creating a "help" option for parents and students to be able to reach out for assistance at the school level. This will on your website and each school principal will be asked to identify a few people to receive notification and follow through to get back with the student/parent with assistance. All the details are not available at this time, but wanted to let you know that you might be asked to be part of this process. We appreciate in advance your willingness to always help!

Classlink
JCPS recently purchased a new system called Classlink this will be our new single sign on option. It is very flexible and you will find it much more friendly than our previous systems. We are in the process of rostering our apps and setting this up - it will basically act as a launchpoint for all apps students, teacher and parents use once we have it completely set up with a true single sign in. K-2 Email Activated
Because our students will be remote learning this fall, Tech Services has turned on the email feature for our K-2 students. Please note, K-2 students can only send/receive emails to/from students and staff. If you are an elementary contact please help make sure your teachers know this is available and if possible offer tips for teaching their students how to access messages and respond as well as digital citizenship tips for email.

NEW Digital Learning Standards for Students
The new digital standards are now in effect for 2020-21 school year. We have added some helpful documents to the Digital Learning page for reference. This is replacing the Information Skills curriculum for Media and Tech leaders who used those standards prior to this year.

NCTest and Chromebook Reminders

With state testing approaching, it is important to begin preparing chromebooks to ensure they meet the minimum state testing technical requirements. We have determined there are some schools with over 100 devices below the minimum requirements. The current required OS version is 58 or higher.

How do I check the chrome OS version?

In the above example, the chrome version is 63 and acceptable for use meeting state testing requirements. The latest up-to-date version available is version 65. Even though this example meets the minimum acceptable requirements for state testing go ahead and click "CHECK FOR UPDATES" to bring the chromebook up to the latest up-to-date version.

Chrome & Flash issues

Flash and Chrome Tips

Google has begun to stop supporting Flash based websites on the Chrome browser. If there are sites that use any type of Flash those sites will begin to give you errors with the older Chrome versions. Desktops should be on Chrome version 55 and Chromebooks should be gradually updating to version 56.

Here are a few steps to help ensure your devices are on the latest Chrome browser.

1 - For PCs:

- Tech services has pushed the Flash update. PCs will need to be rebooted to receive the update.

- Another solution based on information located on this document: https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/flash-player-google-chrome.html

- In the address bar of the Chrome browser, enter about:plugins

- Under the Adobe Flash Player option, select "Always allowed to run"

- Completely close the Chrome browser and open again

2 - For Chromebooks:

- Always power down a Chromebook by pressing the power button and waiting for the device to shut down prior to closing the screen. Ask students to power down and wait instead of just closing the device.

The device will not update if it is not shut down correctly.

- iReady has offered a temporary fix for the Chromebooks. We have applied the settings in the management console but it will take some time to load because the Chromebooks have to pull and apply the policies. Hence, power down your Chromebooks.

- If you prefer to force update policies:

Open your Chrome browser

Type in Chrome browser: Chrome://policy

Click reload policies

Once the policy is applied on a user’s browser

Go to Settings/Content Settings/Flash/Flash exceptions, you will see the following:

Allow this exception "[*.]i-ready.com".

NOTE: If you continue to have issues after this fix is applied to a Chromebook when using iReady, please contact us with the version of Chrome on the device and a specific description of the issue.

Wednesday Web Tool: New Feature Added to Read&Write Chrome Extension

Recently, Read&Write Chrome extension added a new feature that allows students to practice reading aloud any section of text from the web or a Google Doc. This feature is free and available to all users. Here is a brief video explaining this new feature:

Flash on Chromebooks

Unfortunately, Chrome is going discontinue support for Flash, as of right now iReady still says that Chromebooks work with their site. We are talking to the support team at iReady, but we don't have a definite solution at this time

A few schools have reported that anytime the flash player failure message appears they press the

key and the page reloads and continues working fine. If that doesn't work ....proceed to next steps listed in the Wiping or Powerwash document

URGENT Chrome Update! Please READ!

Chrome Update

Starting first thing Friday morning, we will be updating Chrome on ALL desktops and laptops. PLEASE get the word out to your teachers and students.

Chrome will attempt install on start up. However, you could see the following message please read the message:

The box will disappear and the install will begin after 5 minutes. Unless you click OK and then it will begin immediately.

Please note, your Google Chrome may not be pinned to your TASKBAR.

In the event it is not, please take the following action to repin the icon

once you have verified that Chrome has reinstalled successfully. Go to your START MENU

(found in the lower left corner of your screen) > ALL PROGRAMS > Google Chrome > Google Chrome browser. Once Google Chrome opens, complete the action below:

Friday Google Tidbit: Customize Your Google App Launcher with Free Extension

Do you have certain apps like Classroom, Forms, or Blogger that you would like easy access to? Now, with a free extension you can easily customize your Google App Launcher (the rubric cube like icon on the top right of your screen on Google search, Gmail, and Drive).

Follow the screencast instructions below to install the free extension and customize your Google App Launcher:

Please note that if you complete this process on a desktop it will only be that way on that desktop (Chrome changes do not follow you on desktops/laptops). If you install this extension on a Chromebook, it will follow you to whichever Chromebook you sign on to.

Friday Google Tidbits: New Look for Chat and Great Chrome Extension for Reading and Writing Support is now Free!

Happy Friday!

This week, we have two new Google tidbits to share. First, Google Chat in Gmail has been upgraded to a new look with circles for avatar pictures. The look resembles Google + and should happen for everyone over the next few weeks.

New Chat Look:

Secondly, a wonderful Chrome extension called Read&Write for Google is now available with all advanced features for FREE to teachers! Read&Write works with Google Docs to provide additional supports for students including highlighting, vocabulary help, read aloud features, translator, and access to talking and picture dictionaries.

To unlock the premium features of this Chrome extension:

Install it from the Chrome Store by clicking HERE and clicking on the +Free button.
You must register at http://rw.texthelp.com/drive/home/RegisterTeacher with your school email to unlock the premium features.
