Chromebook update/NC Test

We are currently working on a Chromebook update in preparation for the upcoming EOC testing window at the close of the semester.  If you have attempting to use the NC Test app you might have to wait for the update to the chromebook in order for the app to show up and work properly.  This might require a reboot, and will at minimum require that the devices be turned on.  Thank you for your continuous support through these processes.

YouTube Changes

We have had to make some adjustments to our YouTube for Johnston County and you will no longer see the "Approve" option.  We are now using our filter to monitor the content rather than YouTube restricted access which is horrifically broken (Nationwide)

If you have a YouTube Brand account you might want to access it at home (if you can) and follow these instructions from Google:

Brand Accounts allow users to use certain Google services with a separate identity (e.g., a brand identity) that is not publicly linked to their regular Google Account identity. Brand Accounts are not currently supported for G Suite for Education primary/secondary (K-12) school domains. On July 10, 2019, Google took the following actions on accounts not already granted an extension by their school’s G Suite admin:
  • Google suspended Brand Accounts whose primary owner is a G Suite for Education primary/secondary (K-12) school user. The action to suspend, rather than delete Brand Accounts, was done to give Brand Account owners a bit more time to take action.
  • Google removed G Suite for Education primary/secondary (K-12) school users as members from any Brand Accounts they belonged to. This is in accordance with what was previously communicated on May 9, 2019.

Is my Brand Account affected?

You are receiving this email because you are currently the owner or manager of a Brand Account. You can see a list of Brand Accounts you are an owner or member of at https://myaccount.google.com/brandaccounts while logged in with your G Suite for Education account and looking for a “Your Brand Accounts” heading. Note that you may also receive a separate email from YouTube related to this same suspension.

Will my Brand Account be deleted?

  • Suspended accounts belonging to users that are not submitted for an extension by their school’s G Suite admin (see below) by November 1, 2019 will be deleted after November 15, 2019.
  • Even Brand Accounts belonging to users that are submitted for an extension are still subject to deletion after July 15, 2020. G Suite for Education primary/secondary (K-12) school users will also be removed as a member from any remaining Brand Accounts they belong to after July 15, 2020.
  • Note: Deletion of your Brand Account will not impact your ability to use G Suite or other Google products using your primary G Suite for Education account.

How will my Brand Account be impacted while suspended?

  • While your Brand Account is suspended, use of your Brand Account will be blocked on YouTube, Google My Business, and Photos. You will still be able to access Google Services (i.e. Gmail, Drive, Classroom) with your primary G Suite for Education account, provided those services are enabled by your school’s admin. To access YouTube, you may need to switch to your primary account from your suspended Brand Account. You can do this via the YouTube channel switcher (signing-out and/or clearing web browser cookies may also be necessary).
  • While your Brand Account is suspended, Brand Account content such as posted YouTube videos, and photos uploaded to Google Photos, may become hidden from you and others, but will not be deleted.
  • While your Brand Account is suspended, in some cases you may not be able to manage your Google My Business listings. Those listings will, however, remain visible. You can tell if your Brand Account manages a Google My Business listing if (1) the account shows here under a “Your Brand Accounts” heading, and (2) upon clicking the listed Brand Account you then see the Google My Business logo in the “Act as Brand on” section.
  • While your Brand Account is suspended, you will not be able to access the “Download your data” tool with your suspended Brand Account, nor assign any new Brand Account owners or managers.

How can I preserve my Brand Account data?

If your Brand account is active (i.e. becomes unsuspended, or never was suspended), one or more of the options below may be used to preserve some or all of your BrandAccount data:
  • You can download your data while logged into the Brand Account prior to July 15, 2020 to export the Brand Account’s content.
  • You can transfer the primary ownership of the Brand Account to another user before July 15, 2020. The new primary owner must either be (a) a G Suite accountholder that is not in a G Suite for Education primary/secondary (K-12) school domain or (b) a consumer account holder (i.e. account@gmail.com).
  • Note that even Brand Accounts belonging to users that have been submitted for an extension are still subject to deletion after July 15, 2020 (if the primary owner of the Brand Account is a G Suite for Education primary or secondary (K-12) school user as of July 15, 2020).

If you find another youtube issue (a direct link to a specific video) send it to Doug Denton and he will check it. We are working diligently to resolve the issues with broadcasting through YouTube Live.

Curriculum Pathways Update

Greetings! On behalf of Curriculum Pathways®, I wanted to share a couple of updates.

Your School’s Legacy, Shared, Student User Name no Longer Supported
We’ve enjoyed a fairly long relationship with your school, and we are delighted that your team finds many of our 2000+ resources of value to your instructional program.  I wanted to remind you that the legacy, shared student user name assigned to your school will soon be disabled. I’m afraid the time has come to say ‘good-bye’!

Currently, when logging in with the shared, school-wide student user name, your students have encountered a pop-up that this familiar access to Curriculum Pathways is being discontinued. Soon, any attempts to log in this way will redirect students to create a unique account.  Individual student accounts allow students to save their place in the Algebra 1 course, save their work on many of our interactive resources, as well as saving essays when using the Writing Navigator suite of tools. If you would like more information about facilitating student account creation, let me know.

Crio™ Authoring Tool
I’d also like to share our latest offering with you. Crio is a tool that enables teachers to develop online resources incorporating the same interactive elements we use in developing our resources. Teachers can share these resources with a limited audience or publish them for other professionals to review and take advantage of. Teachers from all over are already building out their curricula using Crio in areas like social emotional learning, career and technical education, and art history. Like all of the resources and professional development we provide, Crio is available at no cost.  I’d be happy to go into more detail on Crio, if you are interested.

Thank you, for your continued advocacy of Curriculum Pathways® resources in your educational community. We look forward to maintaining and growing this relationship. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Please share with your staff members!

Schoolnet/Powerschool Sync Updates & How to Stop Unwanted Notifications & Pop-Ups

PLEASE share with your teachers!

This weekend, PowerSchool will be migrating hosting to Microsoft Azure. As a result, PowerSchool will be unavailable from 5pm Friday, March 8th to 5am Tuesday, March 12th.

This will not affect the availability of Schoolnet, however, any changes made in PowerSchool Friday, March 8 - Tuesday, March 12 that are used in Schoolnet will not appear in Schoolnet until Wednesday, March 13th. Examples include: enrollment changes, student information, transfers, and attendance/tardy updates.

Additionally, areas of reporting will not be updated during this period. Schoolnet overnight processes will be restarted on Tuesday, March 12th. Teachers are recommended not to sync assessment scores from Schoolnet to PowerTeacher Pro from Friday, March 8th until the migration is complete on Tuesday, March 12th.

Experiencing issues with having unwanted notifications or pop-ups?  Click here for instructions on how to stop it!

Chromebook Reminder

Please remind teachers that students should not be just closing the lid on their Chromebooks when they are finished for the day, but they need to be shut down.

Updates are sent out regularly so chromebooks need to be updated as they are released for optimal performance. We are sending an update soon which would put all chromebooks at Version 65 and we still have some on Version 50, so they might get several updates which will temporarily slow down the device, until all updates are installed.

Thanks for helping us spread the word.

Edulog WebSchool Assistant Update

Over the weekend of Feb 17, 2017, Edulog conducted a software update. This update broke the access to the WebSchool Assistant transportation application and now requires JAVA 8. To correct the issue, JAVA 8 will need to be loaded on the PCs and/or laptops of staff members that use the web-based School Assistant program. This impacts anyone at your site who needs access to the WebSchool Assistant transportation application. This could include principals, assistant principals, and anyone else that may work with buses. We need your help identifying the staff members and their device(s) at your school that use the WebSchool Assistant. Use this form to report the User Name, Computer Name, and location or office. https://goo.gl/forms/IZ1WpHmp1Whkbp9o2 Please note: When JAVA 8 is loaded it may break other applications that require JAVA 7. We will address those as they are reported.

Update on Quizizz
We have had several student concerns about students searching and finding inappropriate content on the quizizz site.  However, we have worked with the company and think we have a workable solution to allow us to reinstate the site for teachers and students to use.  If you find any inappropriate content we ask that you report it to the quizizz help center immediately so it can be taken down and we can allow access to this valuable resource!

Thanks for your help!

Update on Recent orders!

Many of your schools selected the Chromebooks as your recent central office purchase.  These have been placed "on order" and you received information from Christa Leverette regarding claiming these orders.

One update to that information and future purchases:
It is the brand new Acer Chromebooks, there is not a barcode on the device so folks need to scan the box and not the bag because it adds a letter.  A good rule of thumb is to always double check the serial number on the device.   If you have a question please email: Christa Leverette

Here are updated directions on accepting On Order items for reference.

JCS Critical Services

We hope everyone is safe and sound.

The JCS Data Center had about a foot of water in it and has sustained substantial damage.  As you return to work, please understand we are working on repairs to the JCS critical services - Internet, phones, and other services could have problems - please be patient.  Internet is working but is extremely slow and unresponsive.

We will notify you as we get our various services up and running.

WEBSITES:

Because of issues with our servers no one will NOT BE ABLE to access your websites using YOUR AD ACCOUNT passwords. This means that teachers and webmasters will not be able to access their sites.  Please be patient as we work to get everything back up and running.

PLEASE share with Math teachers: Kuta Software Update

Share with Math Teachers

The CIA department has renewed the purchase of the updated version of Kuta Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Precalculus and Calculus for all the high schools. Middle schools get Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1. Our department has already deployed the software out to the workstations in the site Kuta Software security group in Active Directory. The new shortcuts have also been created under the "Teaches Menu>Kuta Infinite" folder. When they launch the software for the first time it will ask them to activate it, they just need to click through the activation steps and finally click finish. It will prompt the user to input the room location, they can leave this blank. They will not need a code to get started.  If you have a teacher who needs the software and they don't see the icon, please have them submit a ticket including their computer name into IT Direct.

IMPORTANT MCLASS iPAD UPDATE for Elementary Media and Tech!

Attention Elementary Media/Tech: After much discussion the MClass ipads are in need of an update prior to going home for the summer (you can begin Monday and have until the last workday to complete the update).  I'm sorry for the late notice but this new procedure has just become active in our management system and with Apple.

This update will need to be completed by one of you (Media/Tech) or each individual K-3 teacher who has a device from the county for Mclass,  the directions are outlined here and you need to be sure you only do these steps on MCLASS devices.  Please let your MClass manager know about this information as well.
If you have questions contact April Richardson or myself.  Thank you for helping us keep this technology working for your teachers.
Amy
