Technology Recycling

REMINDER:  All technology recycling/discards will be picked up between October 18-29, 2021.  Please have all discards ready for pick up by this Friday.  Please review our Technology Discard / Recycle Procedures document for some very important reminders.

*Projector Bulbs - We made arrangements for your loose projector bulbs to be picked up.  Carefully pack your projector bulbs in a box and place them in a separate area away from your technology discards.  Please be sure to mark clearly on the box, "WARNING:  BULBS WITH MERCURY INSIDE.  HANDLE WITH CARE."  Next, key an IT Direct work order for your tech to pick them up. Due to serious health and safety risks, NEVER handle the bulbs more than absolutely necessary.  If you are discarding a projector, please do not remove the bulb.  Simply place the projector (as is) with the regular technology discards.  Our techs will only be picking up loose projector bulbs.

Our next pick up will be March 14-25, 2022.

Sunday, August 29, 2021

Welcome Back!

We hope you had a restful break and a great first week back with students!  Below you will find some important information/reminders.

Please mark your calendars for our beginning of the year tech/media meeting, which will be virtual via Google Meet (we'll send out the links closer to the date, too).

Date and time options:
Option 1: Tuesday, August 31st 3pm-4pm OR
Option 2: Tuesday, August 31st 4:30pm-5:30pm

Both meetings will cover the same information, so just pick a time that works best with your schedule.
Please remember that it is mandatory for all CTAs and tech contacts to attend one beginning of the year meeting and one end of the year meeting in order to maintain rights and access.

*IMPORTANT* Before you checkout chromebooks to students, look in Destiny to see if they have devices not yet returned from the 2020-21 school year.

JCPS Technology Services recommends Chromebooks for BYOD. We do not recommend Apple or Windows products to use safely on our networks. Other devices, such as Windows or Apple, are not approved due to security issues and an infection could take down the school and entire district. There is no way to ensure updates and virus protections are maintained on personal devices.  If schools have students bringing those devices in, just know they are not approved and put our network at risk.

Please archive/delete Google Classroom groups from last year.  Last year's restrictions through Relay Classroom will not release those students until the class has been archived/deleted.

We have our 2021-2022 dates for Technology Discards/Recycle!

**VERY IMPORTANT**

If you have any projector bulbs that need to be picked up, please put in an IT Direct Ticket in ASAP.  Please do not place them with the Technology Discards/Recycle items or in the courier because the likelihood of the bulb breaking and exposing others to Mercury would be too great.

Do you have technology your school no longer uses but it still works?  Sharing is caring!

Please use this SWAP Meet sheet to add what you have and/or what you need.

1. Archive and Delete the class - found on the menu of any archived class

2. Clear all the students out of inactive classes
OR
3. Open Relay and remove any and all restrictions they had placed on the class last year, if you have active students in the class this is the one you want to select.

*UPDATE* Technology Discards / Recycle

The information below has been added to the

Televisions and CRT Monitors
If you have televisions or CRT monitors that need to be recycled/discarded, please keep those items in a separate stack and ask your head custodian or designee to key in a Maintenance Direct request for pick up.  Those items will be picked up separately from this recycle/discard roundup.

*If you have TVs that are mounted and need to be removed, a Maintenance Direct request (work order) will need to be keyed for the removal.  Once the items are removed, the same request should be forwarded by Facility Services for the pickup.

Projector Bulbs
Technology Services will arrange for the recycling of bulbs periodically.  When you get a blown
projector bulb, just key an IT Direct request and one of our techs will pick them up.

Reminder about Discards

Just a friendly reminder that discards should be gathered in one location at your site no later than first thing this Monday, February 27, for pick-up.  Please let others know (receptionist, etc.) where it is in case you are not available when they come.  I am not sure where they are starting with the pick-ups, but the items should be gone within a couple of weeks.

If you do not have any discards at your location, please let me know so Facility Services will not be wasting a trip.

If you are discarding ipads or chromebooks they need to be deprovisioned.  If you will send the serial number for these items to April Richardson she will take care of this part for you.

PLEASE make sure you mark each item as retired in Destiny and put the date in the retired date field.  As long as the item was not purchased out of Title I, ESL, or another program that tracks purchases, you can delete the record once it has been updated.  However, it is not required.  If the item has been marked as lost in Destiny, call me at 1011 and I will walk you through adding it back into the system.

After this pick-up, you will store your discards in your area until the next all-call which will probably be mid-Fall.  If you have any questions, please let me know.  Thank you for helping with this project!
