Welcome Back!


 We hope you had a restful break and a great first week back with students!  Below you will find some important information/reminders.



Please mark your calendars for our beginning of the year tech/media meeting, which will be virtual via Google Meet (we'll send out the links closer to the date, too). 

Date and time options:
Option 1: Tuesday, August 31st 3pm-4pm OR
Option 2: Tuesday, August 31st 4:30pm-5:30pm


Both meetings will cover the same information, so just pick a time that works best with your schedule. 
Please remember that it is mandatory for all CTAs and tech contacts to attend one beginning of the year meeting and one end of the year meeting in order to maintain rights and access. 


*IMPORTANT* Before you checkout chromebooks to students, look in Destiny to see if they have devices not yet returned from the 2020-21 school year.  


JCPS Technology Services recommends Chromebooks for BYOD. We do not recommend Apple or Windows products to use safely on our networks. Other devices, such as Windows or Apple, are not approved due to security issues and an infection could take down the school and entire district. There is no way to ensure updates and virus protections are maintained on personal devices.  If schools have students bringing those devices in, just know they are not approved and put our network at risk.

 

Please archive/delete Google Classroom groups from last year.  Last year's restrictions through Relay Classroom will not release those students until the class has been archived/deleted.  


We have our 2021-2022 dates for Technology Discards/Recycle!

**VERY IMPORTANT** 

If you have any projector bulbs that need to be picked up, please put in an IT Direct Ticket in ASAP.  Please do not place them with the Technology Discards/Recycle items or in the courier because the likelihood of the bulb breaking and exposing others to Mercury would be too great.

Relay Classroom


Clean up Still needed:
Please remind your teachers the importance of managing their relay classrooms. Never leave "web rules" in place. 
Imagine how disruptive it has been to the staff of one of our middle schools because 5th grade teachers from the feeder schools decided to leave students enrolled into relay classrooms with internet restrictions in place. Students arriving to their new middle school were completely locked out of their classwork. Not cool. Be kind to your fellow teachers. Always set "web rules" to none.

Friday Google Tidbit: Summer Updates to Classroom

This week, we want to share the awesome updates Google has made to classroom over the summer!

The long awaited parent option has been added.  The call it "Guardian" and you can invite one or more parent/guardian to receive updates about their child's work for the week.  
Once you turn this feature on under the students tab, you will need the parent email address it invite them.
Guardian email summaries include:
  • Missing work—Work that’s late at the time the email was sent
  • Upcoming work—Work that’s due today and tomorrow (for daily emails) or work that’s due in the upcoming week (for weekly emails)
  • Class activity—Announcements, assignments, and questions recently posted by teachers
By default, email summaries for your classes are turned off so it will need to be turned on. Guardians can’t access Classroom or view your class stream. 
The other big update is the option to add a "Topic" on teacher posts.  This allows postings to be grouped together and sorted by topic.  This feature can be extremely helpful in organizing posts by unit, or by group.

Once topics have been added to postings an option to view the stream by topics will be available on the left for ease of use by both teachers and students.
Lastly, the Google classroom mobile app has added functionality to annotate student work.  Using the app you can now draw on, highlight, and write on top of students' Google Documents, PDFs, and Microsoft Word documents. The iOS version of the app will also let you type on top of a document. With both apps students can annotate items that teachers have shared in Google Classroom and teachers can annotate items that students have shared back to them.

2016-17 is off to a great start!

Friday Google Tidbit: Improvement to Grading in Google Classroom



In December, Google Classroom had some handy updates to the grading tools that you might find helpful

-Export Grades to Google Sheets: In addition to .csv files, you can now export your grades directly to Google Sheets. The Sheets template includes a class average and an average per student. If you have ideas about how we can make this export to Sheets even more useful, please leave us feedback by clicking the question mark at the bottom left of the Classroom page, then choosing “send feedback.
-Easier to update grade point scale: We know not all assignments are out of 100 points. You've always been able to change the point value, but a lot of teachers had trouble finding this feature. So we’ve made it easier to change the grading scale to any number you need it to be.
-Keyboard navigation for entering grades: When you’re entering lots of grades, you need a fast way to navigate from student to student. We’ve added the ability to use the up and down arrows to move directly from the grade entry area for one student to another.
-Sort by name on grading page: In addition to sorting students by completion status (done, not done), you can now sort by first or last name.
-Last month they also released an update that allows you can now add a private comment for a student when you’re returning their work.
