Schoolnet Update and EOY maintenance
End of Year processing begins Friday, June 28th at 5pm EDT. During this time, all data transfers/nightly processes from PowerSchool to Schoolnet are suspended. Once PowerSchool has completed processing and Schoolnet has successfully synced with 2019-2020 data from PowerSchool, access will be restored. We expect this to be completed no later than Monday, July 8th. A message will be sent once Schoolnet is ready for use.
Once EOY is complete, you may notice some changes in how Schoolnet looks. This is because of the rollover to the 2019-2020 year but classes have not yet begun in PowerSchool. Below is a summary of the changes you may see in Schoolnet.

Reporting
|
Reporting Dashboard
|
The dashboard is populated with benchmark test data from previous year.
|
The dashboard is empty until after the first benchmark test has results loaded. It is possible to show this functionality on a generic training site.
|
Reporting
|
Saved Report Bank Custom and Pre-Formatted reports
|
Reports will reflect data from previous school year.
|
Depending on how reports were built, they may or may not reflect current assignment and contain students. To check a report, run it and click either ’Student set details’ or ‘Selection Details’ to see what enrollment parameter was used. In both Pre-Formatted and Custom Reports, the ‘Current Enrollment’ student set filter will not contain any students prior to the first day of school. As an alternative, the ‘Total Enrollment’ filter can be used.

Reporting

Reporting Dashboard Any reports with Course/ Section data Reporting
|
Course/section reports reflect assignments from the previous school year.
|
Prior to the first day of school, course/section reports must be built with the ‘Total Enrollment’ filter rather than ‘Current Enrollment.’
The grade/mark analysis should be run on prior year sections until after the first marking period.

Reporting

Any reports with Current Enrollment Filter
|
If after the last day of school, current enrollment is zero.
|
If it is prior to the first day of school, current enrollment is zero.

KPIs
|
KPIs are populated from SIS/Test data from previous year.
|
KPIs are not populated with any enrollment data until first day of school.
|

|
Lesson Planner
|
Lessons can only be scheduled for the current school year, so until rollover, it is not possible to schedule for the upcoming school year.
|
Although you can’t schedule lessons until after rollover, you can prior to the first day of school.
|
Assessment
|
Scheduling Tests
|
Although you can build items and tests, the actual scheduling must wait until you are within the current school year.
|
Assigning tests to actual students will be more straightforward after the first day of school as only ‘current students’ are used in the eligibility calculations.
|
My Schoolnet
|
General
|
Works as before.
|
No implications.
|
Additionally, during the summer, Pearson has disabled the student workspaces and upcoming assignments widgets on the student homepage in an effort to prevent student schedules to be visible. It may still be possible for student to view these widgets if they have a stored link in their browser. There was a patch applied to prevent this but we do not have a way to test it until the rollover happens. The student workspaces and upcoming assignments widgets will be restored to the student page on August 19th.
Thank you for sharing this information with your staff.

Update: DPI Changes to NCWiseOwl & NCLive
Please share the following information with school staff that use NCWiseOwl resources.
***************
Just a reminder that the following EBSCO resources are being discontinued and have been replaced by Explora:
Explora is now available from the left side navigation in each of the zones.
As you may know, PBS videos have been accessible through an NCWiseOwl partnership with NC LIVE. This collection includes videos from PBS including Ken Burns’ documentaries, Masterpiece Theater, Scientific American, American Experience, and more. This content has been accessible for districts and charter schools from the www.ncwiseowl.org site by clicking on the link for "PBS Videos". We are pleased to announce that there is now an additional way to access this content.
On March 8, 2016 students and teachers will be able to access the NC LIVE streaming video collection using an application within the NCEdCloud IAM Service. LEA and charter school users will also now be able to access this content using the icon below that will be made available on their my.ncedcloud.org applications page:
We are excited to provide you with additional ways to access this content. Provided that your district has registered external IPs with NCWiseOwl, you will still be able to automatically authenticate and access the streaming video content through the NCWiseOwl site. Please choose the best access option that works to meet the needs of your students.
See below for answers to commonly asked questions about the NC LIVE streaming video service.
Q: Are there technical requirements for my network to allow access to the Media Collection?
A: Yes, your network firewall will need to allow traffic through the following ports:
media.nclive.org : port 80
fms.nclive.org : port 1935
In addition, all computers on the network need to accept cookies from the nclive.org domain.
Contact your local network administrator for more information.
Q: What hardware, software, and other technology do I need to watch the NC LIVE Video Collection?
A: Videos can be viewed on any device with an Internet connection and Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or higher) software. Your device must have an Internet connection speed of at least 175 Kbps.
NC LIVE Media Collection videos are available in three streaming formats: a lower bandwidth option (175 Kbps), a standard bandwidth option (400 Kbps), and a high bandwidth option (1MB). Videos cannot be downloaded or saved to a device.
Q: Do libraries and schools have public performance rights for Films on Demand and NC LIVE Videos Collection?A: Yes! Public performance rights are provided to NC LIVE member libraries, provided the library or any other exhibitor does not charge an admission fee or derive monetary gain.

Resources Drive Clean up
Resources Drive Changes!
The recent changes to accounts has revealed a few things that need clean up. Only one tech contact will have rights at each school. The tech contact should look closely at the Resources drive for your school and clean up the files in it - the Resources drive is viewable by both students and staff. There are some secure documents that have ended up in some of the local resources drives and they can only be deleted by the tech contact. Please make an effort to review what is in your drive and clear out files that shouldn't be seen by both students and staff.

Change in Access level for Tech Leaders at the School Level
JCS Tech Services recently removed everyone's access to the ADUC (the Active Directory User and Computers) tool due to the upcoming move to the auto-provisioning of all JCS accounts. The ability to assign computer printers was lost as well. We are working on a process to allow that access.
For now, if you need to assign a printer, place an IT Ticket so we can assist you remotely. We should be able to address it fairly quickly if you can't wait until your scheduled tech visit.

Changes in the JCOC Page
We are working on cleaning up the JCOC: www.johnston.k12.nc.us/jcoc page
Here are a few changes that directly impact Technology Contacts at the schools.
Here are a few changes that directly impact Technology Contacts at the schools.
- I-manager - this will only be used for Novell, since we are moving away from Novell, you will need to bookmark the page for the remainder of your time in Novell. Here is the direct link: http://10.4.0.19/nps. You can also use the link in your Tech Folder.
- E-Control - is no longer a service we pay for, previously teachers used this service to reset their passwords using security questions. However, since it only worked with Novell accounts, we have also removed this link. Requests for password resets should go through IT Direct.
New icons - you will notice that there are new icons for PowerSchool (principals) and PowerTeacher (teachers) both icons say HomeBase. Homebase is the overarching name that DPI has given to all the products they are rolling out this year. You might help your teachers understand that all these products are housed in this one location to avoid confusion.
On the SOC (Student Online Connections) page you will see a PowerSchool icon as well - this is the link the Parent and Student Portal. ClassScapes will be accessed through Homebase, more information to come on this as DPI continues to complete the transition.
