Helping students be good Digital Citizens and modeling Digital Citizenship ourselves is a responsibility of us ALL.  This has been a growing concern as we have had a peak in inappropriate activity and recently learned that our district is top in the state with warnings in comparision to other districts our size.<br />

In order to help teachers and students, the Digital Learning Team will be posting a "Tip of the Month" for the rest of the year. Having access to YouTube in the classroom gives teachers a huge resource of video content. However that resource comes with a responsibility to keep our students <i>safe</i>, this can be an issue with advertisements and links for off-topic videos within YouTube. Luckily, there are some easy ways to use YouTube safely for instructional purposes.</div>

The website <a href="http://keepvid.com/">KeepVid.com</a> allows you to quickly download videos to your computer or flash drive for safe keeping. Videos that you download will not have advertisements on them or links to other "recommended" videos. Downloading a video also allows you to keep it for as long as you want to use it. There are many great videos that I have found and when it was time to use them in class, the link went bad or the video was taken down. Having your own copy of the video guarantees this will not happen to you.</div>

2.   Use a YouTube Video Clipper</h3>

Tammy Worcester created and has shared this <a href="http://tammyworcester.com/youtube-video-clipper/" target="_blank">free video clipper template</a>. Once you download the template, you copy the YouTube video URL and the start/stop times if desired. It will generate a new link that you can use in your classroom or share with your students to use at home. The new video link will not have any of the related videos or links for students to click on.</div>

3.   Insert YouTube Videos into a Google Presentation</h3>

One teacher I know creates a new Google presentation for every month and every time she shows a video from YouTube it is in her presentation. This makes it easy for her to keep up with what she has shown and it removes all the side advertisements and related videos. It is super easy to insert a YouTube video into a presentation by going to Insert--->video from YouTube. You can search for YouTube videos within your presentation.</div>

Digital Citizenship Resources for Teaching and Learning

Digital citizenship is defined by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) as: “Our students’ ability to recognize the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world, and they act and model in ways that are safe, legal and ethical.” Simply put, digital citizenship is the responsible use of technology to learn, create, and participate.

Digital Citizenship is part of our standards as a teacher or administrator, and NC Digital Learning Standards for Students (NC recently adopted ISTE Standards for Students). Digital citizenship is equally important because it is how we want our students to ethically and morally guide and navigate their digital lives.

Here are some resources educators can use to help facilitate digital citizenship lessons, activities, and discussions:

Welcome Back

We wanted to welcome you back to 2018-19 School Year, and share a few tidbits of information that might be help to you in the CTA Role.

The Acceptable Usage Policy sign off is part of the PowerSchool Parent Portal this year. When parents sign off on the Gazette, they are agreeing to our AUP (among other items). However, we want to encourage schools to take additional time/measures to discuss digital citizenship and online safety throughout the year and especially at the beginning of the year. Gazette attached for those of you who aren't parents in the district.

If you have contractual employees or student teachers/substitutes, They can complete the staff AUP and send it to Christa Leverette, she will work on getting them a computer login as needed. Form attached.

If you are making new purchases and the record hasn't been created (be sure to check for the record by searching "all of Johnston County", if it isn't in the system, you can request a new asset record here: http://bit.ly/JCSAsset

We are still working on configuring the new filter and we are experiencing growing pains! Chromebooks and Desktops are each configured separately, but we are doing our best to make the configuration the same. Please continue to email Doug Denton when you find things that need to be unblocked.

As a reminder, when a student moves from one school to another their accounts will be down while we wait for the official transfer/enrollment to be received in PowerSchool. If you can't see your student in your container, check with your data manager to see if they are completely enrolled first.

Student Google Account Changes

Due to continued concern about safety we are adjusting the following settings in our Google Domain.

Elementary Email and Drive changes beginning March 12:

Student email will be limited to @jcsnc.org and @johnston.k12.nc.us they will not be allowed to email outside domains nor will they be able receive emails from outside email addresses
Student drive files will be also limited to @jcsnc.org and @johnston.k12.nc.us, if a student wants to show something to their parents they can log in and share that way

Wednesday Web Tool: Celebrate Digital Citizenship Week with Common Sense Media Interactive Games!

Last week was Digital Citizenship Week and we want to focus on some of the wonderful resources available for you to teach your students about Digital Citizenship from Common Sense Media.

Common Sense Media offers three interactive games for students in grades 3-12.

Common Sense Digital Passport is an interactive quest for students in grades 3-5. Students can earn a Digital Passport by completing three rounds of gameplay in all five modules. Each module is aligned to Common Core and National Education for Technology Standards for Students (ISTE's NETS). Digital Passport is free to play and available as free app for Apple and Android devices.

Common Sense Digital Compass tests students in grades 6-8 on a series of adventures based on real life stories. Each story takes about forty-five minutes for students to complete and has fifty different combinations of outcomes. Each story is aligned to Common Core and National Education for Technology Standards for Students (ISTE's NETS).

Common Sense Digital Bytes teaches teens digital citizenship through student directed activities based on their interests. Their are eight Bytes available for students to complete and each activity takes about two hours. Each Byte is aligned to Common Core and National Education for Technology Standards for Students (ISTE's NETS).

You can help track your students progress in all three games and instructional units by issuing Digital Citizenship Badges. You can download all badges for units in a grade band or by game.

Digital Learning Updates

All students suspended at the end of last school year or over the summer have been reinstated in both AD and Google. If you have a student having difficulty let us know to make sure we haven't overlooked their account.

Please continue to reiterate with your students the importance of Digital Citizenship. It is a good idea to go over the Acceptable Use Agreement that was posted in the Parent Gazette as well.

Wednesday Web Tool: Excellent New Digital Citizenship Game from Common Sense Media

This week we are featuring a new digital citizenship adventure game from Common Sense Media. Digital Compass is a choose your own adventure game geared towards students in grades 4-8. Students get to explore and make choices in a digital world that includes such topics as: cyberbullying, digital drama, self-image, internet safety, creative credit, copyright, and online relationships.

Digital Compass is available online as well as a free app for Android and iOS devices.

Students can start playing. If you scroll down on the page, you will see a link to teacher resources.

Digital Citizenship Tip of the Month

Helping students be good Digital Citizens and modeling Digital Citizenship ourselves is a responsibility of us ALL. This has been a growing concern as we have had a peak in inappropriate activity and recently learned that our district is top in the state with warnings in comparision to other districts our size.

In order to help teachers and students, the Digital Learning Team will be posting a "Tip of the Month" for the rest of the year. This will include a grade specific short video and a few talking points to help you discuss the issue more in depth with students. Tech Contacts, your principals have been given this information at the last K-12 and asked to share with staff, we would encourage you to reach out to your principal and have a discussion about what would be the best way to get this information out to teachers and students.

Digital Citizenship and Acceptable Use Agreement

Clarification regarding the paperwork for the Acceptable Use Agreement documentation. Please go to bit.ly/auaguide if you need the printable documents for copying.

For students:

The agreement is now printed in the Gazette (first 3 pages). Parents will sign off on a sheet about policies covered in the Gazette and 3340R is listed on this sheet.

HOWEVER, schools will also have students AND parents sign page 4 every year. Schools will only need to print page 4 (page 5 for Spanish).

For staff:

Policy 5220 is listed on the sign off sheet that staff will sign every year.

Digital Citizenship should be discussed throughout the year and the CyberSafety materials are still on the website through the student connections page: www.johnston.k12.nc.us/soc and a quick link on each school's homepage.

Please continue to Monitor Internet Activity Closely

We wanted to give you all a heads up... We have noticed an increase of student inappropriate internet activity over the past few weeks. It is of course... that time of year where the students are "pushing the envelope" on many things as you all already know first hand!

Please take a moment to ask your teachers to remind their students about appropriate use, digital citizenship, and that JCS monitors student internet activity. Students should understand for cases of inappropriate use that their Active Directory/Novell and gmail account can be suspended.

Wednesday Web Tool: 3 Easy Ways to Use YouTube Safely in Your Classroom

Having access to YouTube in the classroom gives teachers a huge resource of video content. However that resource comes with a responsibility to keep our students safe, this can be an issue with advertisements and links for off-topic videos within YouTube. Luckily, there are some easy ways to use YouTube safely for instructional purposes.

1. Use KeepVid to Keep Videos from YouTube

The website KeepVid.com allows you to quickly download videos to your computer or flash drive for safe keeping. Videos that you download will not have advertisements on them or links to other "recommended" videos. Downloading a video also allows you to keep it for as long as you want to use it. There are many great videos that I have found and when it was time to use them in class, the link went bad or the video was taken down. Having your own copy of the video guarantees this will not happen to you.

2. Use a YouTube Video Clipper

Tammy Worcester created and has shared this free video clipper template. Once you download the template, you copy the YouTube video URL and the start/stop times if desired. It will generate a new link that you can use in your classroom or share with your students to use at home. The new video link will not have any of the related videos or links for students to click on.

3. Insert YouTube Videos into a Google Presentation

One teacher I know creates a new Google presentation for every month and every time she shows a video from YouTube it is in her presentation. This makes it easy for her to keep up with what she has shown and it removes all the side advertisements and related videos. It is super easy to insert a YouTube video into a presentation by going to Insert--->video from YouTube. You can search for YouTube videos within your presentation.
