Technology Thursday (3/24/22): New Resources in Discovery Education

Check Out New Resources in Discovery Education!

Discovery Education continues to release new content every month. Here are three of our favorites to check out:
  1. DEmystified (Science, Grades K-8): How do caterpillars become butterflies? What is sound, and how do we hear it? What causes geysers to erupt, or canyons to form, or the moon to change shape in the sky? And what in the world do trees have to do with ice cream? In this DE Original Series, join Discovery Education on our endless journey to DEmystify the wonders of our world—you might just be surprised by what you find.
  2. Grammaropolis (ELA, Grades 3-5): Discover the wonders of grammar in this musical series for upper elementary students. Through a combination of music videos and vignettes, Grammaropolis helps students learn about abstract grammar concepts through engaging visuals and storytelling. In this metropolis, punctuation and the parts of speech are personified based on the roles they play in a sentence.
  3. Art with Mati and Dada (Art, Grades K-5): This short video series features animated characters Mati and Dada as they meet with famous artists and architects throughout history. The videos are 7 minutes long and most have closed caption support to reinforce literacy skills.

Media Monday (11/15/21): Explore Discovery Education's Vooks

Vooks in Discovery Education

Discovery Education offers many resources that can be easily integrated into library media  lessons and help to expand on what students are learning in their core classes!

Let's take a look at one resource that you can use with your students today: Vooks! Vooks are geared towards students in grades K-2. They are storybooks brought to life through animation and narration. Search for "Vooks" in Discovery Education, and you should see the channel.

There are several titles from which to choose. Click on a title to access the video and its details and features.

On the main page of each Vook, you will see a menu on the right with options to assign, share, save and more.

Scroll down to find a summary of the video, along with transcripts, related keywords, and prepared classroom materials when available. There are also suggested videos and content for deeper exploration of topics from the Vook.

Check for student understanding with interactive activities, create live or self-paced quizzes, and engaging presentations directly from the video in a matter of minutes. Click "Build an Activity" to get started.

Once you have built a video quiz activity you can "Assign" to students to complete on their own (in the Discovery Education student dashboard) or you can "Launch Now" which engages students live via activity code.Once you have built a Slideshow activity, you have the option to share a link to the content with students or assign it.

If it is your first time accessing Vooks, Discovery Education will walk you through each step of any features making this resource easy to implement.

DiscoveryEd

Heads Up High Schools - DiscoveryEd is now active for those high schools that requested it (if you are unsure check with your admin team). You can access through Classlink!

Announcement from DPI#GoOpenNC is

North Carolina’s free, statewide platform for educators to find, collaborate, and create standards aligned, openly licensed, supplemental instructional resources. Since launching in December of 2019, the platform has grown to over 38,000 resources, almost 30,000 users, and over 3,500 educator created resources using the authoring tool on the platform.

In an effort to continue to grow and share #GoOpenNC, we have started the #GoOpenNC Collaborators --- a group of educators at the charter school and district level who serve as ambassadors for #GoOpenNC and are the first to know about upcoming professional development and updates on #GoOpenNC. The goal is to have at least one representative from every PSU. You can see our current list of collaborators on this published sheet.

It is our hope that you will share the #GoOpenNC Collaborators form with those in your Public School Unit who will be champions for Open Education Resources and be involved in resource curation and building to ensure high quality resources are available for all K-12 SCOS areas. In addition, feel free to share our brief one-page document that highlights #GoOpenNC.

Our first virtual meeting for our #GoOpenNC Collaborators will be held on Friday, November 20th from 10am-12pm. An invitation to the meeting will be sent on Friday, November 6th to everyone on our collaborators list.

Thank you for your support in growing #GoOpenNC! If you have any questions, please contact Pam Batchelor at pamela.batchelor@dpi.nc.gov

Don't forget we have PD offerings listed on the JCPS Teacher Page bit.ly/jcpsteacher - there are 3 upcoming sessions on Nearpod, as well as offerings by content area on this site: bit.ly/jcpscredit. 6-12 might really be interested in these offerings for Wednesdays.

URGENT PLEASE READ AND SHARE: DiscoveryED

The budget continues to be tightened and while we fully intended to keep DiscoveryEd Streaming for Elementary and Middle, the funds just are not there.  So it is with much regret that I share with you that we will no longer have DiscoveryEd for teachers and students.  Please let your teachers know.

I'm so sorry for prematurely sharing that we were able to find the funds! I appreciate your understanding that we just can't make it happen.

Sidenote: I have some good news coming soon about some additional resources that will hopefully fill the gap a little bit!

Wednesday Web Tool: Rediscover Discovery Education!

This week we are taking a closer look at Discovery Education. Did you know that Johnston County Schools has a subscription to premium streaming? Discovery Education offers a large collection of high quality multimedia resources, interactive elements, and lesson plans.

Here are some tips for making the most of this incredible resource!

Discovery Education is Integrated with Google

You no longer have a separate username/password for Discovery Education,it is synced with your JCS Google account. This is also true for all students in our district. You can create classes in Discovery Education by searching for your students email addresses to be able to assign them content and activities to complete.

Discovery Education (DE) also has a share to Google Classroom button that allows you to easily share resources with Google Classroom. When a student clicks on a DE resource you have shared to Google Classroom, they will automatically see the content since they are signed into Google.

Explore Content Collections

Discovery Education content experts have curated hundreds of content collections-multimedia resources and lesson plans grouped by grade bands. Here is a video explaining the content collections.

To quickly view all available content collections, click on "Advanced Search" at the top of the DE homepage, then select "Content Collections" in the By Media Type drop down menu, and click submit.

Check Out the Spotlight on Strategies!

Discovery Education has created a series of mini lessons to go along with their multimedia content. Have you ever found a great video on your content topic but wondered how will my students understand the key ideas? Use one of the Spotlight on Strategies (SOS) for Key Ideas and Details with that video to make sure your students identify those important ideas and facts!

Every SOS has a introduction video for the teacher to explain how to use that strategy with your students. Most of the SOS do not require additional technology and are hands-on activities to engage your students.

To quickly find all strategies, type SOS in the search bar at the top of the Discovery Education homepage and click on "View Strategies by Skill":

I hope these tips help you rediscover the wonderful resources available to you in Discovery Education!

Have a great week!

Media Monday: DiscoveryEd Books

A huge thank you to Deanne Holcombe at Clayton High who worked tirelessly to help us get the Digital Learning Grant books removed and reissued.  Deanne, we can't thank you enough for your hard work to help all of us have the resources that we want and our teachers will use!  Most of the orders have been populated, so if you haven't checked out your eFollettShelf, you might want to check it out.

With our library of e-resources rapidly growing, let's not forget about the resources that we have on our subscription sites.  Did you know that Discovery Education has almost 1,000 different books that have been read aloud as a video?  How do you access these books?
  1. Log into Discovery Education and go to "My DE" so you can see the search bar.
  2. Select the Advanced Search and Using the Publisher field select "Weston Woods"
  3. Your return will be 960 books ....You can then look at them in a list view, sort by Most Popular, Recently Added, etc.
  4. Many of the titles have shorter segments if you don't want to watch the whole book and a teacher's guide to help facilitate the instruction of the book.
While many of these titles are picture books, there is research showing that picture books can make a great impact in the secondary classroom, and can help bring engagement to a lesson. In other words, "Picture books aren't just for Kindergarteners."  Look around you might find something you can share!

Happy Monday!

Discovery Education

Discovery Education decided to offering any educator access to our NEW Streaming Plus FREE of charge for 60 days. Below is a quick 4 min video highlighting the new features we added to the service this summer. The most exciting new resource are the CCSS model lessons to support teachers in grades K-12. This would be an upgrade to your existing service but it might serve as a great opportunity to allow teachers to access the lessons and additional resources to provide feedback.

If you have teachers who might be interested in exploring Discovery Streaming Plus please provide them with the following link: Discovery Streaming Plus
If they have any questions or if you are interested in having Shayla Rexrode, the Discovery Education representative, visit and present to your teachers please let Amy Stanley know so we can schedule it.
