I wanted to share with you that a national Computer Science Framework has been adopted! The Framework took months to complete and has input from our district and others across the nation. (Shout out to those who helped in the review process)<br />
This framework is intended to help educators and state leaders as they develop Computer Science curriculums.  As you may know, North Carolina has not had a clear pathway for teaching Computer Science in K-12 so this could be the guiding force that helps them to reinstate this in our state. In Johnston County, we have been working with K-5 teachers to expose students to computer science through code.org and other resources like the Google CS First.  So I am really excited to have a clearly defined framework of the skills that will help our students be successful beyond the classroom in careers in computer science. Computer Science Education Week 2021 and Hour of Code is HERE!!

December 6th - 12th, 2021

We are excited that many of our JCPS schools have registered for the Hour of Code and planned activities and events to celebrate Computer Science Week 2021! No worries if you did not register - you can absolutely still participate! Visit the Hour of Code website to get started: https://hourofcode.com/us. There are many fun and educational Hour of Code activities that will get students exposed to and interested in learning more about computer science!

The Hour of Code website features activities that you can search by grade level, topic, activity type, length, coding language, and classroom technology situation so everyone can participate! To celebrate students who participate, there is an easy way to print certificates of completion or print out stickers. Learn how here.

Computer Science & Coding Choice Boards - Ready-to-Use Activities

Looking for a resource to help students learn about computer science topics, careers, or people who have made significant contributions to the field?

Thanks to Capstone and Future Ready Librarian spokesperson, Shannon McClintock Miller, there are great, ready-to-use choice boards for K - 12th grade students which incorporate informative PebbleGo articles and Capstone eBooks (with read aloud features, videos, and some in graphic novel format), as well as coding practice activities that give students an excellent overview of Computer Science.

Computer Science Update

K-12 Computer Science Framework

I wanted to share with you that a national Computer Science Framework has been adopted! The Framework took months to complete and has input from our district and others across the nation. (Shout out to those who helped in the review process)
This framework is intended to help educators and state leaders as they develop Computer Science curriculums. As you may know, North Carolina has not had a clear pathway for teaching Computer Science in K-12 so this could be the guiding force that helps them to reinstate this in our state. In Johnston County, we have been working with K-5 teachers to expose students to computer science through code.org and other resources like the Google CS First. So I am really excited to have a clearly defined framework of the skills that will help our students be successful beyond the classroom in careers in computer science. The NCDPI Educator Effectiveness Division is offering some instructor led free online courses. Registration is limited to 35 participants per section. For a full description of courses or information about the Home Base Professional Development System, please visit the online PD catalog. Classes start, April 4. There are also Self-Paced modules and mini-modules you are free to explore.

- Connecting with our 21st Century Learners: 5 weeks, 1 CEU

- Introduction to Data Literacy: 5 weeks, 1 CEU

- Universal Design for Learning 1: UDL in the Everyday Classroom: 5 weeks, 1 CEU

- Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects, Part 1: 5 weeks, 0.5 CEU

Last Code Session for JCS this school year: Saturday April 23, 2016.
