Wednesday Web Tool: ABCya Animate!
Happy Wednesday!
Today we are featuring a neat web application that allows your students to create their own custom animations. This web application is FREE and does not require any type of account or login!
To get started, go to: http://www.abcya.com/animate.htm
You will see a homepage like the picture above, for first (or second) time users, I highly suggest watching the brief tutorial on the right side. Once you are comfortable, you click on the "Go" screen on the left.
This what the main "create" panel looks like. You can have up to 100 frames in your animation. 100 frames would create a video that lasts about a minute. You can edit the background using the + symbol on the top blue button on the right side. Along the bottom, you have options to draw, add shapes, text, images, an eraser, and your color palette.
One import tool is the copy frame button on the right side. This is very useful if you wish to add text to your animation. Each frame is about a second so if you have any text at all, you need to copy the frame multiple times until the animation displays the words long enough to read.

Once you are happy with your animation, click on the save button and it will be saved as a .gif image. You can insert the image just like a normal picture but yours will be animated!

Wednesday Web Tool: Remind 101
This week we are sharing an excellent communication tool for parents and students called Remind 101. Remind 101 allows parents and students to subscribe to classroom updates via text message. It hides both your personal data as a teacher as well as the students and parents cell phone numbers. It is a very simple and easy to use communication tool.
To get started, you will need to go to: https://www.remind101.com/
You will need to create an account before you can use the service:
Once your account is created, you will need to add your first class. You can make as many classes as you would like or keep the students together in one class.
The next step is to subscribe to your class so you can start sending messages. You will need a text capable cell phone for this step.
There is a lag time between when you send the message and when your account updates with your subscription. It took about an hour after I sent my initial message for my account to confirm my subscription. This is the same process parents and students will need to follow to subscribe to your class messages.
After you have added a class and subscribed to it, you will be taken to your account dashboard. This is what mine looks like:
Within the red box, you can type new messages for your class and send them instantly or schedule them ahead of time (think about reminders for tests or projects being due, you can schedule reminders in advance!). The green box shows how many people are subscribed to each class. The blue box is a reminder of how to subscribe to this class and has a link to print instructions for parents and students.

Wednesday Web Tool: Voki
Welcome to the start of the 2013-2014 school year!
The animated message above was created with the free web tool Voki. Voki allows you to make customized video messages up to 60 seconds long for free. Want to learn how?
To get started, go to www.voki.com.
You will need to register for a free account. Once you have created your account and logged in, you will see this screen:
Select the create tab to make a new Voki.
There are many ways for you to customize your Voki. The first menu of buttons edits the character type and body, clothing, and accessories. The second menu controls the voice. You can record your own voice, upload a voice file, or use the generated voice. You can also change your Voki's background and the player frame around the Voki. The slider toolbar beneath the Voki edits the size of facial features and the color of eyes, lips, and hair.
Once you are happy with your Voki, click the publish icon and your creation will be saved.
You will be able to edit the size of your Voki and be given the HTML code to embed in your choice of websites. You can add your Voki to your school center page by copying the code in the box and then use the HTML editor option in the edit function of the school center page you wish to display your Voki. When the HTML editor box is open, simply paste the code and click save. Your Voki should now load on your school center page.

Wednesday Web Tool: Project Gutenberg-42,000 free eBooks!
Today we are sharing a fantastic web resource for secondary grade levels; Project Gutenberg, an online resource of over 42,000 free eBooks available in multiple formats. These eBooks are high resolution that includes the original images and illustrations used in the print version.
Click on the image to go to the homepage or go to www.gutenberg.org
From the homepage, you can search the catalog or view by category.
The categories are grouped by subject area as well as by topic.
Once you find a book you would like to download, there are a variety of formats available including the same file types as Kindle and Nook eReaders (files are available without graphics to save space if needed). If you do not have an eReader or eReader program on your computer, you can download Adobe Digital Editions for free.

Wednesday Web Tool: Create Animated Videos with Wideo
Today we are showcasing a wonderful web tool that allows you and your students to create animated videos.
To get started, visit: www.wideo.co
You will see the homepage with a video introduction and a sign-up box. Wideo is still a Beta application so options or layout may change.
After you register for your free account and click on create video, you will see an in-depth tutorial that shows you the basics of animation. The great thing about Wideo is you can upload your own pictures and audio files to customize your videos. Animation is a multi-step process that can take a fair amount of time. I would consider keeping the final product for your students under a minute for the first time they use this application. It can take 20-30 scenes to complete a one minute video.
Once your video is finished, you must publish it in order for it to be viewed online or embedded on a website or blog.

Wednesday Web Tool: Population Education Teacher Resource
Population Education has a free resource center that is filled with lessons and activities for all grade levels. All lessons and activities center around population issues, human-environment interaction, and global interaction. The topics cover all curricular areas. The lessons are grouped by grade level and are linked to the common core curriculum.

This lesson on the water system and drinking water supply is hands-on and gives a good understanding on how little water in the world is drinkable.
