"Literacy at Home" - Digital Children's Reading Initiative

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Office of Early Learning has developed and released “Literacy at Home,” a digital children's reading initiative to provide continued support for North Carolina’s youngest readers.

This digital resource provides literacy activities for learners in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. These resources were curated for families and communities and specifically target the following literacy skills: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and oral language.

The website organizes resource by grade level and then specific literacy skills listed above. The specific literary skills are first defined for parents and then described through videos. Also included are at-home practice activities, printables, and online activities.

There is even a link to "online libraries" which include the following free book resources that school librarians may also find useful: Unite for Literacy, Free Children's Stories, Monkey Pen Books, Decodable Books, Flyleaf Books, Storyline Online, and Wilbooks.

School librarians are frequently asked for resources to help build reading proficiency by parents, families, and colleagues. Please share with anyone in your school community looking for literacy resources, or include with other parent resources on your school or library website.
