Google has launched Public Alerts within its Search and Map applications to help keep you safe. If you search or look at an area in a map that is under a current weather warning, the alert will be displayed. If you have an Android cell phone, alerts will be displayed on your phone if you have the Google Now app. Google is just starting its Public Alerts program and hopes to expand the alerts to other important events such as Amber alerts. Currently, Google alerts are synced with the National Weather Service and the US Geological Society.

Here is a sample alert for a Severe Thunderstorm Warning:
