Two updates in the world of Google this week, first Google Maps has undergone a redesign to make the most popular features from the Google Maps app available for the desktop version. You can type in the name of a restaurant or store and receive directions and customer reviews in one window. With Google Maps you can now select your mode of transportation to get the most efficient directions. Google Maps also has a 3D carousel feature that allows you see the world around you and explore new places with street level views.

The second announcement is the selection of Raleigh as a finalist city for Google Fiber. Google Fiber is an ultra-fast internet and cable network with speeds up to 1GB per second (about 100 times faster than most current internet options available). Google will be working with local governments in and around Raleigh (including the town of Garner) to see if Google Fiber can be made a reality for our area. This would bring opportunities for local businesses and schools to benefit from less expensive and faster internet speeds. It is also a major attraction for adding businesses to the RTP area.
