Remember how you could create folders in GroupWise?  You may have looked for a way to do this in Gmail, but you probably could not find the word folders.  You actually need to look for the word labels.  Labeling your email allows for a much more dynamic experience.  Here are Google's thoughts on why labels are more efficient than folders:

* from Google Mail Guide

 But don't worry.  You can still create folders, so let's get started.

Click on the gear icon in the top right corner of your Inbox and choose Settings.

Once in Settings, click on the Labels tab at the top.

Once in the Labels setting, you will see Google's premade labels.  You will not be able to delete the system labels, but you can hide a label by clicking the hide button.

Create your own label by clicking on Create new label under the horizontal line.

Enter the label name.  (Nest label under is to make this new label a "subcategory" of a main label.  Do not choose this unless you are making a "subcategory.")  Click Create.

You will then see the label on the left side of your mailbox.  To move an email from your Inbox to a "folder" (AKA Label), click the box to the left of that email, click the folder icon at the top, and scroll down to the appropriate "folder" (AKA Label).  The email is taken out of your Inbox and is placed in that folder.

If you have the email open, you can click on the folder icon at the top and file the email immediately.

Thanks for joining us!  Next Friday, we will look at tagging emails with color coded labels.
