Wednesday Web Tool: Interactive Sites for K-5 Education

This week we are highlighting an awesome resource for all elementary teachers. Karen Ogen has created a clean website filled with interactive lessons and simulations for all areas of elementary education. Interactive Learning Sites has categories by subject area and strand with direct links to activities.

To visit Interactive Learning Sites, go to: http://interactivesites.weebly.com/

Once you click on a subject area, you will be taken to a list of topics/objectives to choose from. Here is the current list of science topics:

Clicking on a topic will take you to a grid of interactive websites and games. Here is the grid of interactive activities for the topic of landforms in science:

Karen has put together an amazing resource to share with educators and updates the site on a routine basis.

As with any website that could be considered a "game" by our district internet filter, I would recommend you have a student try to access the resource on a Chromebook or other device to make sure they can access it with our internet filters. If you find a resource that is blocked that you would like to use, you can request it to be unblocked by filling out this brief form.

Thanks to Karen for her hard work in creating Interactive Learning Sites!

Wednesday Web Tool: Cartoons for the Classroom

Cartoons are not just for little kids anymore. Cartoons for the Classroom is a 9-12 Newspaper in Education Programs resource that provides lesson plans for teaching different topics such as economy, politics, society, etc. through the use of cartoons. The downloadable lessons are tied to Common Core State Standards and include talking points, links, and additional resources.

There is also a Cartoon Evaluation sheet for students to use analyze the cartoons.

Along with the lesson is the option for students to be creative by drawing their own conclusions and create their own captions using the current cartoon.

There are currently 289 lessons available.

Wednesday Web Tool: Go Social Studies Go- Free Online Interactive Textbook Alternative

Happy Wednesday!

This week we are exploring a free social studies website that is a good free reference for grades 6-12. Go Social Studies Go is a set of online textbooks grouped by subject (US History, World History,  and World Religions). Each textbook is divided into topics and subtopics. Each page has graphics, notes, and short videos that are related to the topic. Go Social Studies Go is based on Common Core Standards.

Let's look around, go to: http://www.gosocialstudiesgo.com/

Click on "Get Started" to see the subject list.

Click on the picture for the subject you wish to explore. I'm going to look at World History.

This is what the top of the topics page looks like. Scroll down to see all the topics under World History. I'm going to click on Code of Hammrurabi to learn more about that topic.

This is what Hammurabi's page looks like. Notice the image, quote, and short video segment that goes along with the longer notes. Other pages have different primary sources such as interviews and journal entries. I have also seen maps and letters on certain topic pages. Some of the topic pages also have quizzes designed to go along with the notes.

I hope you explore Go Social Studies Go and show your students this easy to use reference site for social studies.
