Media Monday (2/14/2022): Start a Pokemon Club in Your Elementary School Library!

Start a Pokémon Club in Your Elementary School Library!

A Pokémon Club is a great way to build a community of play for Pokémon fans throughout your school community, encourage game play, bring in new players, and create a safe space.

The American Association of School Librarians is partnering with Pokémon Club to offer elementary school librarians an opportunity to bring Pokémon Club to schools. This program is recommended for students aged 6-10 and you do not need to be a "Pokémon Master" to implement this program

Tech Thursday (2/3/2022): Mystery Science Launches New Site

Mystery Science Launches New Site!

Just a head's up that the look and feel of the Mystery Science website has changed as of January 28th, 2022!

The Mystery Science Team has phased out their old site and has launched a new site in order to add more features and improvements for educators. Regular users may have already explored the new site; the "new" site was made permanent as of January 28th, 2022.

The new look includes friendly font that mimics teacher's handwriting, bright colors that are usually found in a classroom, and many new and engaging images. Besides a new look,  teachers will be able to find lessons with a "Top 5 Bonus" feature as well as "See all units at once" feature!

K-5 Educators will still access Mystery Science through ClassLink launchpad and/or through Discovery Education.
If you have questions about Mystery Science or would like help integrating this tool into your classroom lessons, please reach out to the Digital Learning Team at digitallearning@johnston.k12.nc.us

Lexia with QR Badges

Lexia for Elementary
The TLC's have been shared how to use Clever QR badges with the Lexia tool we have started this year.  It is a little on the technical side so I wanted you to have access to the directions as well so that you might need to assist some of your teachers.

Here is the document.  You can also find it in the Curriculum folder in the Tech Folder.

Wednesday Web Tool: Interactive Sites for K-5 Education

This week we are highlighting an awesome resource for all elementary teachers. Karen Ogen has created a clean website filled with interactive lessons and simulations for all areas of elementary education. Interactive Learning Sites has categories by subject area and strand with direct links to activities.

To visit Interactive Learning Sites, go to: http://interactivesites.weebly.com/

Once you click on a subject area, you will be taken to a list of topics/objectives to choose from. Here is the current list of science topics:

Clicking on a topic will take you to a grid of interactive websites and games. Here is the grid of interactive activities for the topic of landforms in science:

Karen has put together an amazing resource to share with educators and updates the site on a routine basis.

As with any website that could be considered a "game" by our district internet filter, I would recommend you have a student try to access the resource on a Chromebook or other device to make sure they can access it with our internet filters. If you find a resource that is blocked that you would like to use, you can request it to be unblocked by filling out this brief form.

Thanks to Karen for her hard work in creating Interactive Learning Sites!

Media: 104 EBook Titles for Elementary and Local Author

I have pushed 104 District purchased titles for 5-8 to all the elmenetary e-shelves.  These titles are non-fiction Science and Social Studies topics that will be great for kids to use for research projects.  Let me know if you have any questions.

I was asked to share the following with you from local author: Barbara Connor:

I am thrilled to have a book on the 2015-2016 NC Elementary Battle of the Books list (How to Steal a Dog).

I wanted to touch bases and let you know that I have recently relocated from Boston to North Carolina (Asheville).

I’ve been doing school visits for over 20 years, something I very much enjoy doing. I was hoping that you might be willing to spread the word (via list serv or other means) to other North Carolina school librarians that I am here and anxious to begin scheduling some visits in my new state.

There is information on website here:

Thank you (and thank you for the important work you do on behalf of young readers of North Carolina)

Barbara O'Connor

Wednesday Web Tool: Teaching Kids News

Teaching Kids News
TeachingKidsNews.jpg
Finding online news articles appropriate for elementary and middle school kids is difficult. Teachingkidsnews.com was created just for this purpose. The website posts “Timely, relevant news articles for kids...” Each article includes curriculum ties that help teachers connect learning with real life issues. The target audience is Grades 2-8.

Getting started is easy. Simply go to teachingkidsnews.com.

Click on an article from the start page, or choose a category then select desired article.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the classroom curriculum connections.

Most of the articles are just the right length for the elementary and middle school student and are stories that would interest them. Use them with  the whole class, guided reading groups, or independent reading assignments. Just like any resource, be sure to preview for content to ensure they are appropriate for the students in your class.

MClass iPads - Do NOT upgrade to iOS8

Don't Update Yet

The Amplify team is currently testing mCLASS with the new Apple iOS8 update. It's supposed to be released on 9/17 so we recommend that all NC schools wait until after 9/17 to update their Apple devices. However, there may also be bugs Apple has to fix, so it will be best to wait until after your BOY window closes to update devices.  Please turn off the automatic update feature, if enabled on your Apple devices, in order to manually upgrade when everything is cleared and tested.

Please share with your K-3 teachers and others who might assist with mCLASS testing.  The mCLASS representative at the schools should be getting this as well.

Also just a head's up the mCLASS ipads AppleCare runs out October 9, 2014 so if you have some that need repairs you will want to move forward to get those taken care of soon.
