Media Monday: Easy Bib EDU

Johnston County Schools now have
FREE access to Easy Bib EDU.

Media Specialist should have received an email with your school's password with directions on how to get your teachers and students registered.

Information copied from the email, "Anyone who would like to use EasyBib EDU should use this code. Students and teachers who have never signed up before can register at https://edu.easybib.com/auth/coupon and returning high school and college users can upgrade their existing accounts by logging in at https://edu.easybib.com/auth/login, and then entering the school coupon code. Elementary and middle school students must create new accounts with anonymous usernames. Please read the user guide for more information.

There are no limits on the number of times the code can be used, so feel free to share it with everyone in your school! Please note that there are different coupon codes for elementary/lower school students, middle school, and high/upper school students. "

The EasyBib EDU User Guide is a great resource!

Media Tip: Read Across America Ideas and BOB

March 2 is Read Across America day and many of you already have big plans but I wanted to share this opportunity from Discovery Education just in case you can work it into your celebration plans.

Also here are some ideas from NEA and Scholastic about how you might celebrate!  What ever you do to promote reading I know it will be great!  Take pictures and share in the comments.  We'd love to hear the great things are you doing in your media centers.
There have been many emails about the upcoming competitions, but to help put everything in one place, please note the following resources.  We wish each team the best of luck!

Middle School Competition: Friday, February 26
West Campus Conference Center and Gym
211 E. Rose Street, Smithfield, NC

Elementary School Competition: Friday, March 4
Workforce Development Center
135 Best Wood Road, Clayton, NC

Title 1 Schools check this out from Kathy Parker at DPI!
For those who may not have heard about the Open eBooks initiative, I'm forwarding an announcement I posted to an Oregon listserv for school library staff. You are welcome to share the information.

Open eBooks makes thousands of award-winning and popular electronic books available to K-12 students from low-income families. Access is via an app, and that app is now available for download to mobile devices. Educators, including librarians, in schools with 70% or more of students in need may register to receive codes, PINs, and a letter to share with students' families. Once set up, students access the eBooks via the app on their personal or parents' smartphone or tablet or via school or library-loaned devices.

Partners in this initiative are Digital Public Library of America, First Book, and The New York Public Library, with content support from Baker & Taylor. A variety of publishers have generously submitted their full catalog or a selection of titles.

For an overview of how the program works, read today's press release and browse the FAQ. To stay in the loop, you can follow Open eBooks on social media and sign up for a mailing list.

Students in your school qualify if the school is Title 1 eligible or receives Title 1 funds, or if 70% or more of students are on free or reduced lunch. If your school qualifies or if you are unsure, please share this information with administrators and staff to determine how to take advantage of this opportunity.

Thanks,
Jen

Media Opportunity for Leadership

Chandra Cook, Sheila Robertson and Robin Willis are serving as representatives for the region 3 Battle of the Books this school year. At the end of this year, Robin will cycle off and we will be in need of 1 more volunteer to serve on the committee as a representative starting in the 2016-2017 school year.  Please be sure the media coordinators in your district are aware of this opportunity to demonstrate leadership beyond the school level (Standard 1 on the professional standards), and have them contact me if they are interested in serving in this role.

Responsibilities include:
  • attending State Battle of the Books Committee meetings (approximately 4 per year)—our next meeting is Friday, September 19
  • writing questions for 1 or 2 books on the new list each year
  • communicating with system/county level contacts
  • collecting verifying compliance forms
  • coordinating the regional competition with the other representatives and host district
  • assisting at the state competition

If you are interested email Robin Willis and copy Amy Stanley. We hope one or more of you might be interested in this leadership opportunity.

In the past many of you have worked with your school in order to attend the NCSLMA Conference - October 22-24, 2015, as always the conference is in Winston Salem, NC.  Registration is open until September 30, 2015 if you are interested in attending this year.
