As we are halfway through the first week of school for our traditional calendar students, it is a perfect time to teach your students about Digital Citizenship as they start the year and are excited about all the new curriculum and resources they will be using. This week, we will explore three great resources for teaching your students about Digital Citizenship.
The first resource we will explore is Planet Nutshell. Planet Nutshell is an online collection of short educational videos. They have an entire category of netsafe videos.
Please note these videos are best viewed by the teacher station as some use a streaming source that may be blocked by student logins.
When you click on the "Netsafe" category, you will see a list of videos and the appropriate grade level:
When you click on a video, you can play it directly from the site or share it. You can also download a transcript of the video to use for questions or as an additional resource.
The videos are about three to four minutes long and are age appropriate as well as entertaining. Showing a video would be a great way to start a class discussion or help explain parts of our Digital Citizenship agreement which must be signed every year by students and parents.
Another fun resource is the PBS game Webonauts. Students do not need an account to play the game but they do need a free account to save their progress. In this game, students complete missions on cyber safety. The missions are in-depth and this is a game that could be played for hours.
The game also has an educator page with tips for how to incorporate the game into your lessons on Digital Citizenship.
Our final resource is a series of free iOS apps from Infinite Learning Lab, which features the popular character Garfield. The apps are very engaging and would be great for all elementary students.
